Plasme Desktop Crashes More Often and Annoying than Ever

I've been using Kubuntu for many years, and it's been good until the last two releases: 11.04 and 11.10. With 11.04, the plasma desktop crashed about once a week, but the desktop taskbar came back and I was able to continue with my work. However, 11.10 is a different animal.

The plasma desktop crashes several times on a daily basis when I quit applications such as Firefox, Thunderbird, and even native KDE applications. I get the black screen, the taskbar doesn't recover, and I'm forced to go to a terminal and reboot the system from there.

This is getting too old for me, and as much as I like(d) Kubuntu/KDE, I may have to ditch them both for something more stable. Does anyone have a clue of what the problem is and how to fix it?

    Thanks!

What version of KDE are you currently using?

Well, 4.7.3 is stable, so your experiences are (likely) the result of using non-standard (third-party) repositories and/or applications installed that did not come from the standard repositories (manually downloaded and manually installed). Are either of these 'conditions' true on your system?

Here the (K)Ubuntu KDE/Plasma part is working without problems.

          Code:
          :~$ kde4-config --version
          Qt: 4.7.4
          KDE Development Platform: 4.7.4 (4.7.4)
          kde4-config: 1.0

No, all packages came from standard repositories.

Okay, standard repo's. Is your current 11.10 an upgrade from 11.04 (and 11.04 an upgrade from 10.10 or earlier), or from a fresh install?

All standars repos. 11.04 was fresh install, and I upgraded it to 11.10.

Hmm. That leaves us with a graphics issue - potentially. What video card and driver version do you have and are using?

Can you restart plasma, without rebooting, by killing the process (e.g. from ctrl-esc "System Activity") and running plasma-desktop from a terminal, or alt-f2?

I too find plasma disappointingly unstable (though not nearly as bad as the OP's situation). If you don't mind, I'd like to hear other people's reports on its stability - in Kubuntu 11.10 with KDE 4.7.4.

For me it often crashes (but restarts ok) when I attach or remove an external screen - whether using the nvidia drivers or the nouveau drivers.

If sometimes hangs for no obvious reason, but in all these situations I can restart it as described above and nothing is lost.

The frustrating part is that quite a few times I have been unable to start it at all and I've had to delete my configuration and go back to the default. Because of this, I've currently given up using any widgets or panels other than the default panel ... which kind of defeats the purpose.
I'd rather be locked out than locked in.

You could try a new user, see if they suffer from the same problems... If they do, then it's likley something wrong with your installation, if they dont then its likley something wrong with you configs.

The later is easy to fix, just rename or more ~/.kde/share/config/plasm* (all files beginning with plasm that is):

                      Code:
                      mkdir ~/plasma-old-configs # [1]
                      mv ~/.kde/share/config/plasm* ~/plasma-old-configs
                      then restart plasma:

                      Code:
                      killall plasma-desktop && sleep 1 && plasma-desktop
Note: you can restore the settings stopping plasma and copying the config back then starting it again.

[1] You can delete this folder when you recover anything you might need from it. It will contain all widget settings and contents so any notes or settings will be there.
