Muon said there was an update.. so I said run the updates.

it stops at 57%.. I tried once.. reinstalled the OS and tried again..
same thing..

/var/log/dpkg.log has "installed kcalc 4:4.7.3-0ubuntu0.1"
as its last entry

/var/log/apt/term.log stopped at "prepairing to replace system-config-printer-kde.

im not sure where else to look

How long did you wait before restarting/reinstalling? I often have updates that are choppy/slow, especially when my internet connection is bad. Nothing (yet) that took longer than 30 minutes to get going again though...

ya it was over an hour..
both times stuck at 57%..

try running the upgrade from a terminal

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

at least you should be abel to see the progress and where it gets stuck or aborts and why.

and just for the "be shur of it" post the output of

df -h

to see some space info...........the prob sounds a lot like a lack of space.

good idea.. didnt think of that.. ill run it from a term.

ill check the DF but the only way it could be out of space is if the installer didnt use the entire disk..

just booted it up.. went to install firefox and got this.


Another application seems to be using the package system at this time. You must close all other package managers before you will be able to install or remove any packages.


but it doesnt look like update manager is running.

i rebooted.. it seems ok right now.

ill do the command line again and see if it says up2date.
however this is a laptop for my mother in law.. she knows nothing bout computers so I hope it will do the updates automatically from this point.

That's a problem with the *buntus, IMHO. Because of the "automatic update notification" feature, I chose Debian for my mother in-law's computer. She has not Clue #1 about the system, and I don't need a 9 p.m. Saturday night call about a broken computer ....

I would like to see a setting, accessible via super-user only, in systemsettings, that can turn off update notifications. Then the "system support staff" could use apt-get to run updates when visiting the supported system (or of course ssh could be implemented for remote updating). In other words, don't put the string that pulls the pin on the grenade into the hands of a novice.

well it wont do them automatically but it should work with the notifier now

aparently when muon got stuck it left you with

and now you have fixed this so things should be good for now ..........

you could put the terminal in the panel (a launcher) and leave her with instruction to run the command ...... when she sees the notifier..........if it was the last command run then hitting the up arrow ^ once will show it ......the up arrow will cycle through the terminal history

ya thats what I meant.. the panel will state there are updates..so she can click on it..
