[solved] Kernel update requires more than 200 additional packages

    Hi there.

I'm using kubuntu 11.10 and I currently have the 3.0.0.12.14 kernel. From oneiric-updates there is a newer kernel (linux-image-generic) 3.0.0.14.16 but if I select that I want to update to this kernel the system selects 264 additional packages for installation (including Japan, Chinese and more languages), wants to remove the grub2 and install the grub legacy and several other wired things.

    Any one any idea?

Re: Kernel update requires more than 200 additional packages

It really should not. Are you using any of the "muon " suite for the update ? If so, install synaptic, press the reload button, press the "Mark all upgrades button" then, go to "custom filters" on the bottom-left button bar and then click on the "marked changes" filter. Do you still get 200 packages for the update ?

What repositories do you have turned on ?

At here, if i turn the proposed /1/, /2/ repository on and :

      Code:
      sudo apt-get update
      &
      Code:
      apt-get -s dist-upgrade
NOTE: This is only a simulation!
apt-get needs root privileges for real execution.
Keep also in mind that locking is deactivated,
so don't depend on the relevance to the real current situation!

The KDE 4.7.3 is in the Oneiric proposed updates. It is waiting the testing /3/ and move to the Ubuntu updates.

Re: Kernel update requires more than 200 additional packages

        I do using muon suite.
I do not have access to the system now. I'll test synaptic and I'll get back tomorrow.

By using synaptics, did not help. The same result.

Re: Kernel update requires more than 200 additional packages

I would suppose that you recently (deliberately or inadvertently) installed packages that have dependencies on these additional packages, but for some reason did not pull them in at that time. Maybe you used a downloaded .deb package instead of the APT system.

                    You can use
                    Code:
                    sudo apt-cache redepends <packagename>
                    to investigate.

                    For example:

                    Code:
                    don@ubuntu:~$ sudo apt-cache policy texlive
                    texlive:

So, I have a lot of investigation, in order to identify which is the "problematic" package.

I'll inform you when I'll find it.

Have you tinkered with your apt configuration recently?

At first glance, it looks like your system is configured to also install "suggested" packages as dependencies automatically (usually not a good idea).

By default, *buntus treat "recommended" packages as dependencies, but not "suggested", so this should not happen unless apt configuration has been changed.

the last one was probably twenty packages for cups....

                            just a comment.
Regular updates is a somewhat different thing than a kernel upgrade wishing to install hundreds of additional packages.

Does Muon have tickbox for "Treat suggested packages as dependencies"? (I don't use Muon, so I don't know). If it does, unticking it should solve the issue for asyr.

But a setting in Muon should not affect apt-get's behavior in a terminal, right? See the dist-upgrade result above?

I'm thinking a downloaded debian package was installed (forced) with dpkg, and didn't get its dependencies at the time.
