    Error: hd0 write error

Right, I've been trying to put up with that for a while but I think it's getting time to fix it...

I've got a laptop DELL Latitude D410 that I recently updated to Oneiric.

Every time I turn it on, straight after the DELL screen I get a blue screen, eventually an error message comes up saying:
    Error: hd0 write error
    Press any key to continue...
And then eventually goes away but it stays stuck on the blue screen for at least 5 good minutes. If I turn off the computer and turn it back on straight away, still the same blue screen and error message but it gets over it a lot faster. If the computer stays off for longer then the same long wait again.

Under Natty the same thing happened but for a shorter time but the message was different:
    Error: hd0 out of disk
    Press any key to continue...
Haven't seen this message again since Oneiric.

Under Natty I had hard drive problems and had to buy a brand new one and the exact same thing happened with the old and the new one.
My hard drive is far to be full as I store everything externally.

Any idea on how to fix that?

    Cheers!

During the delay, put your ear right against the place on the laptop where the hard drive is. Can you hear whether the platters are spinning? I've seen, more than once, drives where the platters just don't spin up. If you don't hear anything, try tapping the case over the drive.

In my first job out of college, we had a bunch of Hardcards seize up. They wouldn't boot from a cold start, but once the mechanics warmed up, they'd boot. I discovered that dropping the PC onto the desk from a height of a couple inches worked, too.
