    Impressions and questions

So I have installed from CD.

first Impression: installation is quick - fastest of any version I have used.

Question: What are the the 3 colored dots (red, green, blue) on the panel for? The instruction say to click on the Meta Key and 'Q'. I assume the Meta key is 'Ctrl' or 'Alt', but nothing happens when I do so.

How do I get a program started at KDE boot without putting a box in the panel?? I was somehow able to do so under 11.04, but have not been able to do so under 11.10. I like to run gkrellm, but having the program box in the panel just clutters up the panel. I tried 'Start and Shutdown' under System Settings, but still got the box.

    Re: Impressions and questions

The three dot thingy is a widget to bring up the activity manager. I don't really use it so I removed it from mine.

The "Meta" key is usually the Windows logo key on most keyboards. Mine has an Ubuntu logo over the windows one

I can't help you with gkrellm as I don't use that either, sorry.

      ~/ is your home directory
.kde is like all files with a leading dot a hidden file.
To make them visible in Dolphin just press Alt+. (yes, Alt and the dot)
Once more Alt+. and they are again hidden.

To find and link gkrellm you split Dolphin in two with F3.
On the left side you get into the root ( / ) directory and by CTRL+F you invoke a search to what you want to find (gkrellm)
On the right side you go to ~/.kde/autostart/

Once on the left side gkrellm is found you can drag it to the right side and select the option to link.

Thanks - that did it !!!

I wrote too soon. Looked at the launcher panel again after rebooting - the gkrellm box is still there.

Right click on the application and select Configuration (or hit F1).
Select the tab properties and check the before last box...

You said you used it before?
Thanks - yep, in 11.04. But that was months back and with the state of my memory ........ need I say more?
