I have to check for updates manually there's something wrong is it a general problem?

Maybe you didn't configure the package manager for automatic checks?
Start up Muon and get into the Settings/ Repositories.
After supplying your password you get a panel with five tabs, the 3rd. allows you to set up regular checks. -

Yes that's the first option, daily.
Then every second day
Every week
Every two weeks.

You do need to have installed muon-notifier and update-notifier-common.Comment

A long shot, do you maybe have another package manager installed like Apper (Kpackagekit)?Comment
