nvidia tool cannot write to any config file

I used the nvidia tool to set up dual head display. It worked fine, but could not write to /etc/X11/xorg.conf. It could in face not write to any file name anywhere.

I solved my problem by displaying its output and cut and pasting to an editor, but it looks like the tool is not working properly.

you need to run the tool with kdesudo run the command

    Code:
    kdesudo nvidia-settings
check you menu entry (rt click on the k choose menu editor) and correct it so the menu entry works the same way . if you don't get a password prompt then its not running as root, if its not running as root it can not save to the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file

      That fixed it, thanks.

When run from the menu it could not write its settings to any file - even in my home directory.

Previously on (non k) Ubuntu you got a password request when you started it from the menu - as with gparted. That seems to be a more friendly approach don't you think?

The intent of nvidia-settings is to allow individual users to have there own setups. It's supposed to save a file in your home .nvidia-settings-rc when invoked as a regular user.

You can force the behavior you're suggesting by adding kdesudo to the menu item. Personally, I think they should program a switch in the program itself allowing root access when desired, thus giving us both options.
