[SOLVED]After upgrade from 11.04 to 11.10, cannot see wireless network

Just upgraded my laptop from 11.04 to 11.10 and while there were a few problems, got everything solved except that my laptop cannot see my wireless router (something it did without a hitch in 11.04). My wireless card is a Broadcom bcm4312.

I click on the network settings applet, click on wireless->add->scan and my router is nowhere to be seen. I'm a complete noob on wireless networking, so I have no idea how to fix it.

I don't know what kind of laptop you have and this is probably a shot in the dark; however, I'll shoot anyway. It sounds as though your wireless card is turned off. I don't know about your notebook, but mine has a switch on the side which turns the wireless card off. Sometimes, I inadvertently move that switch to the off position when doing something like packing up my notebook for transport. When this happens and I boot up, I got no wireless.

This sounds sort of like, "Did you plug it in?", but, well, did you?

        Just trying to help...

Thank you, Lee, for the suggestion. I have a Dell Inspiron laptop and have checked and double-checked the hotkeys for toggling wireless. That is not the problem either. In the meantime, I have tried this solution: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1859749, but that also was ineffective. I got to the point where I just decided to reinstall kubuntu 11.10 from scratch, but after doing so, the problem persists. My next step is to try another distro. Any suggestions?

What's the output of this command:

            Code:
            rfkill list

Actually, I'm not talking about hot-keys. I have a Dell Latitude and there is a switch on one end of my computer that slides back and forth turning the wireless on / off. I'm not familiar with the Inspiron, but do you have any kind of light visible from the top that indicates the wireless is powered up? All the Dells I've had in the past including this one have some sort of light indicating that the wireless is powered up. If you have a light, then I don't have anything else to offer as I am more of a programmer than a systems geek. If you don't have a light, check the switch. Should be on one end or the other.

I don't have a Dell laptop, so I can't verify, but from the output below, it appears you have two wireless cards. Would you mind showing us the output of a few more commands? Yes, these are some of the same commands from the Ubuntu forum post you referenced.

                  Code:
                  lspci -nn

                  lsusb

                  ifconfig

                  iwconfig

I have a Dell Latitude and the output from the command on my machine is very similar to his:

Curious. My ThinkPad (Intel wireless) and my HP Mini (Broadcom wireless) each show only one entry in rfkill list.

                        Let's continue investigating:

                        Code:
                        sudo lshw -C network

In one of those "DOH!" moments, I logged onto the web gui for the router and discovered that in changing a couple of the settings, I had inadvertently unchecked a box by "Broadcast this network?" which meant it was invisible. After checking the box, Kubuntu sees the router and connects fine.

                            Sorry for the bone-headedness.
