    password somehow reset

OK so i was fishing around in the system settings trying to figure out how to not require a password on start-up. i didn't change anything yet. i closed the system settings window and tried to install some updates. when it prompted me for my password it said it was wrong! so now i'm afraid to shut my computer down cause i won't be able to log back in if it's not recognizing my password.

bottom line: how can i change my password without "knowing" the old one

    There should be no change.

Remember. Linux is case sensitive. Have you got cap-lock on?

it can be done thru the recovery mode on grub/grub2. however your on your own to learn how to use the passwd command....

                    Re: password somehow reset

both. i tried using the passwd command and it didn't do anything and i tried using my live cd and i couldn't even make a backup of the shadow file. i think maybe because i couldn't run dolphin with the gksu pre-fix from the command line. i'm assuming that gives me system wide privileges and is maybe why i couldn't make a backup... ?

                      Re: password somehow reset

to start dolphin with root privilege use
                      Code:
                      kdesudo dolphin
                      .

gksu is a Gnome thing.....and I think it would be gksudo

system settings -> login screen->convenance -> enable auto login.
