    triple boot issues

    HP/Compaq nc 6320 laptop.

    first, i installed Win7 64bit - has no issues.
then i did a clean install of Kubuntu 11.10 64bit (from cd).
then i did a clean install of BackTrack5 (from dvd).

from this point forward, any/all comments will be concerning the Linux OSs - not Windows 7 (unless commented specifically as such).

i can boot to either BackTrack5 or Kubuntu 11.10 without any issues.
i can shut down/restart BackTrack5 without any hesitation.
i cannot shut down/restart Kubuntu 11.10 at all - i have tried the usual buttons for shutting down and restarting, i have also tried opening XTerm to perform an 'init 6' command, but it states that i am not root. when i try an 'su' from XTerm, no matter which password i type in, it is incorrect.

at this point, while still in Kubuntu, i had to hold the power button until the laptop shut down completely.

this is less than ideal. if anyone has ideas, i'd be more than happy to test those ideas.

dont know why your shutdown/restart buttons dont work (mine do) but reather than hold down the power button try

    Code:
    sudo shutdown -h now
    or
    Code:
    sudo reboot
untill you get things straitened out

From the Kubunt Desktop, launch a Konsole session with Alt+F2 and type konsole and press enter. Then, in the console, type:
      Code:
      sudo shutdown -r now
But, the normal shutdown routine should work:

Click the K Menu button, select Leave > Shutdown > Turn off computer.

thanks for the replies! i've tried all methods you both mentioned and everything is working correctly now...

strange... very strange, but i'm not complaining.

        thanks again!
