A Few Questions From a KDE Newbie

Or at least let me say that i have tons of experience with gnome but much less experience with kde...

I just installed Kubuntu 11.10 and it is really running well...but i was wondering if you guys could help me with a few questions:

    1) On gnome using Nautilis File Manager when you highlight a file you can select what you would like to do with it (ex: copy/paste/move to trash/etc...) from the upper portion of the window...I don't see that in Dolphin (other then "right clicking" to bring up those menus..
Is there a way to set the window so those options appear (other then the right clicking method...lol) ?

    2) Where is the "Update Manager" located (if i want to open it up) ?

    3) I wanted to add Java Runtime Environment...I notice that the Muon Package Manager only has the open source (jdk) version...
Is there an easy way i can add the Sun Java 6 Run Time to my kubuntu? How would i do it?

    4) Also...is it possible to get: libquicktime1 i think that is needed to play full screen hd video clips from yahoo movies...in Linux Mint i was able to do that because it had that codec...

    Thanks

Re: A Few Questions From a KDE Newbie

I am very new to Kubuntu also having switched from Ubuntu because of frustration with Unity but I can answer a couple of your questions.

Kickoff > Computer > KPackageKit will let you search for application packages and the second choice down on the left panel is to get Software Updates.

If you want to use the KDE version of Synaptic Pkg Manager you can use KPackageKit and enter "Muon" in the search box. It will show you the choices available. Click on the line of what you want to install and an "Install" will appear at the right end of the line. Click on "install" then click on Apply at the bottom right of the screen.

You can then use Muon much like you used Synaptic. By the way if you prefer Synaptic Pkg Manger, you can install it on Kubuntu using KPackageKit.

Regarding Dolphin I must say that I am just learning how to use it so I am not sure what you are asking. I have been leaning on Krusader because it is closer to what I used to use in the old days. However there are lots of neat things in Dolphin and I plan to learn more about it but I have found it frustrating when I was trying to learn the subtleties of Kubuntu.

As to adding Sun Java 6, just enter SunJava in the search box of KPackageKit and you will have all the Java apps displayed.

Yes you can install libquicktime1 using the KpackageKit or Muon. Just enter it in the search box, highlight what you want, click Install then Apply at the bottom right.

Hope this helps. Maybe someone else can give you info on Dolphin.

Dolphin does not have this capability, I think it may be specific to nautilus/Ubuntu/gnome and/or unity. You can run nautilus in Kubuntu if it is your preference

Re: A Few Questions From a KDE Newbie

Thanks Claydoh...so then i guess that is a feature not found in dolphin...i thought that might be the case since i couldn't find that option available in the menus...

And MacDuff....like you, that is the reason i am trying to make a switch over to kubuntu...because of unity and shell in gnome 3....I was running Linux Mint which doesn't have that but in future editions, it is going to get harder for them to maintain the conventional "mint" desktop...they have to resort to using a gnome2 fork to do it and will also offer gnome 3 but that is likely to have the "shell"....

Ok...appreciate that but libquicktime1 isn't in the muon package manager and neither is sunjava 6 runtime...only the open source (jdk) version... i thought there might be some other way to get it? wonder if anyone knows?
Also....where do you find the "update manager" on kubuntu? I know it comes up when you get some new updates from the system notification area of the tray...but what if you just want to bring it up at any time...where do you find it?

Have you enabled the universe repository? To do this, you will need to edit /etc/apt/sources.list and uncomment the listings for the universe repositories. You can do this from within the nuon package manager:

Settings > Configure software sources and check the universe box.

You can then download libquicktime1 or 2.

I believe muon can do the same things update manager can do. It is possible to install update manager, but I think it may drag in a lot of other things with it. If you want to install it anyway, then from a konsole or terminal,

          sudo apt-get install update-manager

but I would recommend using muon as that is now the supported package manager for kubuntu.

Just to make sure, are you talking about toolbar buttons? (you can add those by editing the toolbar).

Sun (now Oracle) Java packages are not available from the repos anymore for 11.10 (they used to be in the partner repository): http://www.webupd8.org/2011/09/how-t...-7-jdk-in.html

Re: A Few Questions From a KDE Newbie

yeah...the universal repo is checked in the software sources of the Package Manager...i do see libquicktime2 and it is supposed to already be installed, though i don't see libquicktime1 (that's what linux mint has)...

And the only java runtime offered in the package manager is the open source one not the actual sunjava6 runtime (again...which mint adds on to their repos)...

I thought there might be another way to get it...perhaps some terminal commands or a deb package somewhere...

On the good news front, i figured out there is a shortcut key on can use instead of the actual "right click" button my my laptop...so that will make up for the dolphin file manager not having those options listed on the top of the window...so, that problem is solved

Re: A Few Questions From a KDE Newbie

Thanks, Kubicle..just saw your post...appreciate the link about the java....
Well, as far as dolphin, i mean the stuff you see when you "right click" say an mp3 music file...you know, like "copy" "paste" "open in amarok" those kind of things. But if not, i can just use the keyboard shortcut button for that (less wear and tear on the laptop "right click" button...LOL)...

Teunis...Hmm that is a thought...i remember when i was testing Zorin5 (which is based on ubuntu) those quicktime files did open in the Totem Movie Player...maybe i could try that...I don't know how mint gets those yahoo movies preview clips in hd to open automatically to full screen...nice trick...wonder how Clem over there does that

As far as the java runtime...maybe there isn't any real difference between the Sun Java and the open JDK version as far as performance...

Oh and yeah Kubicle......."muon-updater" that's it! Well, told you i was a kde newbie
Not that i haven't played with Kubuntu before but don't have the vast experience i have with years of gnome...
So i am still a bit "rough around the edges" sometimes...

Other then these minor things...i am really enjoying the kubuntu 11.10.....just migrated from Mint main edition on the anticipation of future problems they might have in maintaining the classic desktop style...i really don't like unity or shell so was looking for a good alternate desktop...so looks like you may be getting another KDE CONVERT here

The keyboard shortcuts are usually faster, but you can add buttons for copy, cut, paste etc. in the toolbar (in the top of the window) by right-clicking on the toolbar>Configure Toolbar

Just in case you missed my EDIT on my previous post:
