Added characters in a telnet session...

I'm not sure if this is an encoding thing, text thing, or what. But when I telnet to a battery web management card using telnet, I get the following:

Enter Password: p*a*s*s*w*o*r*d*^M

Enter Password:

Is the '*' being added by the terminal? Do I need to try a different terminal type? The device says to use UTF-8 and xterm...
