New install 11.10 wifi won't scan

I'm a complete noob to.. My wifi card won't scan for networks. If I configure the connection info it doesn't connect. Gateway nv53 artheos wifi. I use wpa2 encryption too.
Wicd says it's not installed.
Iwconfig shows wlan0 Essid is correct.

Never mind. I was able to manually configure the wifi in command line, installing wicd now. Seems to be working..
Any packages a noob should check out?

I never connected to WiFi but i think my laptop has WiFi. .i tried for searching in package manager for sm thing.. I installed these > WiFi Radar & RutilT WLAN manager.
I really dont now how to use them. There is no WiFi connection around here.
