I use 64-bit Kubuntu 11.10 on a desktop PC.
My headset is plugged into my desktop's front audio in/out jacks. Kubuntu detects sound through the mic but none of the applications that should record the sound/detect the sound are able to detect the sound. For example, Skype does not detect sound through my mic. Audio testing in System Settings > Multimedia > Phonon > Audio Recording > Test does not detect any sound. But... Pulse Audio Volume Control > Input Devices does detect sound input from my mic.
I can plug my mic into my desktop's rear panel and the same situation occurs - the mic works, pulse detects the mic but no applications can use the sound input. They're all deaf.
I've even tried a USB web cam with built in mic to see whether anything changes. The situation remains the same - sound detected by the sound system but not by applications.
I've checked the BIOS to toggle between AC97 and HD sound. It makes no difference.
I've had this problem since upgrading from 11.04 to 11.10. I've now done a complete re-install. This issue occurs even when a LiveDisc is in use.
Has anyone else suffered this and does anyone have a solution?
