I just set up a USB connection to my old Canon S450. I went to http://localhost:631/ and successfully added the printer. Under model, I set it to Canon BJ-5 Foomatic/bj10e, because it said "recommended" next to it. When I tried to print a black and white PDF, it printed a blank page.
I tried switching it to Canon BJC-6000, because that was listed under PPD/Driver on this page:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardwareSupp...sPrintersCanon
Same results.
I've tried printing a test page. It also printed blank. This whole thing seemed really weird to me, because there was no printing at all, even though it made the motions of printing.
When I tried "Print Self-Test Page", I got
Unsupported document-format "application/vnd.cups-command".
When I selected "Clean Print Heads", I got the same error.
Next, I thought that maybe the ink cartridges had dried out, or something. This printer had been out of use for awhile, and the cartridges were old. I took out the cartridges and the trays they were in. The underside of both the colored tray and black tray were splotched with blank ink. Hhhmmm. The black cartridge seemed to be intact, but maybe it needed to be cleaned. I soaked it in a bowl of warm water, as directed by a video. The ink flowed freely into the water.
So, I'm at the end of my rope here. The cartridge seems to be okay, and Kubuntu is recognizing the printer. But something is preventing it from actually getting any ink on the page. The heads probably need to be cleaned, but I haven't been able to figure out how to fix the "Unsupported document-format" error.
