Desktop Freezes

I posted this question a couple of months ago - also tried on irc - but never received any responses. Perhaps I didn't give enough information, so I'll try again.

Here is my system configuration:

Processor: AMD Athlon 64x2 Dual Core Processor 5200+ x 2
OS type: 64 bit
NVIDIA Driver Version: 173.14.30
GeForce 7025/NVIDIA nForce 6

The problem: a few minutes after booting up, the desktop freezes completely. The options on the panel disappear: no menu, desktop switcher, etc.

I really like KDE and would like to be able to use it. I hope someone is able to offer some suggestions.

Is there a little bit of time in which you can do stuff, or does the desktop freeze right after it paints the panel and background after the login finishes?

Are you able to press [Ctrl]+[Alt]+[F1] and get to a text-mode command prompt?
