    Dual Monitor regression

In 11.04, my laptop with a run-off-the-mill Intel graphics chip would recognize the correct resolution of my TV when I hooked it up to the VGA port so I could watch movies without hassle. However, in 11.10 I get a max resolution of 1024x768, with corresponding image distortion on a wide screen TV.

    Anybody else seen this?

No, I cannot change the resolution, not from within KDE that is. I have used a workaround hack invoking a script that tells xrandr to add a modeline, but that is not something I should have to do in 2011

Unfortunately, intel graphics support is spotty. You should search on the cutting edge driver and xorg support for intel video for answers.

There's a few posts on this forum and a couple websites to look into - xorg edgers and http://intellinuxgraphics.org/

try hooking it up after you have booted up and logged in .

@hear if I boot with an external monitor attached through the HDMI port I get a situation like you are describing.

BUT if I boot up log in and then attach the external I can configure as kneaded.

          Re: Dual Monitor regression

I am sorry, I am not going to jump through more hoops. I can at least hook up a VGA monitor and use it now, but with all due respect, Dual Monitor in Linux sucks. And I have been a Linux user for 6 or 7 years so I am a loyal penguin follower.

But something is seriously wrong with X development if they still cannot do the following right and without breaking it in the next release:
          - detect correct resolution for a VGA monitor that is hooked up
          - save the preference for that monitor so that next time I hook it up the desktop layout is restored
          - restore the screen orientation when I unhook the monitor without having to run the Display config again
          - restore my desktop (widget placement etc) when I unhook the monitor

At work I use Windows 7, and even though I hate lots of things in it, dual monitor is a breeze. Thing is, the tools are there to make it work properly under Linux, but somehow it is still not considered a prio 1 issue, even though in my opinion it is. So things keep breaking, I still need to resort to the command line to configure things manually and behaviour is erratic.
