ok after that... can you bear with me through this steps, coz im thinking im missing something simple here...
I have 2 devices on Audio Playback Devices...:
-Manhattan HDMI Audio [Mobility Radeon HD 5000 Series] Digital Stereo (HDMI)
      -Internal Audio Analog Stereo

What should be my preference? which one first?

Re: sound card does not work after upgrading to Oneiric.

I have to add, the preference right now is the way I posted in my previous post,
previously for whatever reason when I clicked on "test" down there by highlighting any of the devices, it didnt have any output, but now, it does play the test sound.

how ever, my other programs other than amarok does not work. should I do any changes?
also, under tab "Audio Hardware Setup", i have a 'hardware' and 'device' configuration fields..
hardware, has 2 drop down menus names sound card and profile
device configuration has 2 drop down menus called sound device and connector
now this is how it looks like:

        Hardware:
        Sound card: Manhattan HDMI ............................
        Profile: Digital Stereo (HDMI) output

        Device COnfiguration:
Sound Device: Playback (Manhattan HDMI .............)
        Connector: HDMI

and when I click on the tests on this tab, "front right" "front left", no sound comes out..
        Cheers, -Linda

Re: sound card does not work after upgrading to Oneiric.

the weired thing (or at least its weired to me) is that it seems that my system's volume control works on the Internal Audio Analog Stereo, (even the "test" works on the analog) but, under Audio Hardware Setup tab of phonon when I change the devices to the analog device, it goes crazy because re-openin the phonon will show blank fields on the same tab. then when I restart everything goes back to normal.
P.s: on none of the stages nothing has sound except Amarok!
          Cheers, -Linda

-Manhattan HDMI Audio [mobility radeon HD5000 series] digital stereo (HDMI)

I encountered a similar problem recently (no idea why it didn't affect me initially) and found that I had to go into KMix and to Settings > Select Master Channel... to point it to my sound card instead of my onboard audio (another thing I can't figure out is why it's even detecting my onboard audio at all because I have it disabled in the BIOS).

Now I'm having the strange problem that when I use the KDE volume control, it only affects the left and right speaker, but the center and rear speakers stay at full volume. Anybody have any ideas?

Re: sound card does not work after upgrading to Oneiric.

omg... im getting sick and tired of this! my sound does not work AGAIN!!
It was fine after many many changes in phonon, but now its dead and I dont know what to do (since the phonon has the same settings as when it was working)
weired thing is that... recently a dialog box was poped up indicating that it has found few devices that are not needed at all (!) do I want to premanently remove them? (whats that?!) which since I was not sure, I just closed the dialog box. (I didnt choose neither yes or no)
              I have to add...
              these are my sound devices:
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 5 Series/3400 Series Chipset High Definition Audio (rev 05)
01:00.1 Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc Manhattan HDMI Audio [Mobility Radeon HD 5000 Series]
and weirdly, only the intel one was working, not ATI. the dialog box that poped up also was asking to permanently remove the ATI. (should I have clicked yes?)
anyways... any idea how I can solve this??
              Cheers, -Linda

I had the same issue, with the exact same drivers present (this is a Thinkpad W500, same model??)

Anyway, I removed pulseaudio and sound worked and has been working ever since.

                    another thing...
this is the dialog box i receive (snapshot)
and, somehow my sound suddenly goes dead, and when I restart back its fine, againg dead, restart, dead, restart... >
I feel that whenever I receive that dialog box message the sound dies.
so far I havent decide to click yes or no yet. just closed it. which one I should choose??

Sorry, hadn't seen the pulseaudio related posts.

Can you do a lspci in the console when sound works and lspci when the sound has gone dead?

Also, after receiving the dialog, does dmesg give any useful info? It looks there is some IRQ conflict that causes a device to be disabled.

I was waiting these days for it to go dead again, it was working fine, i was starting to believe somehow its solved!
but just now my microphone is dead...
so as I previously saved the lspci when everything was fine:
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 5 Series/3400 Series Chipset High Definition Audio (rev 05)
01:00.1 Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc Manhattan HDMI Audio [Mobility Radeon HD 5000 Series]

and now that the mic is dead:
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 5 Series/3400 Series Chipset High Definition Audio (rev 05)
01:00.1 Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc Manhattan HDMI Audio [Mobility Radeon HD 5000 Series]

and again, even for this one again I got the message that I posted a snapshot in last 2 posts...

in my phonon, under Audio recording right now I only have the Internal Audio Analog Stereo...
                        is that ok...?

p.s. I wonder when these are going to be solved !
                        Cheers, -Linda

now even speakers are dead again as well!
no sound! no sound at all!!!

Can you run dmesg just after sounds starts getting quirky? Just to see if there is some pci conflict.

Maybe in your BIOS setup you can disable one of the audio devices. Or you can choose to blacklist one of the drivers. But let's start with the dmesg bit.

                                I have a similar issue.

Sound hardware being HDA Intel Realtek ALC262. Phonon does not show this in the Audio Hardware Setup, it only shows Internal Audio. Alsamixer does detect the sound hardware. PulseAudio volume control does not show the HDA Intel hardware.

The most similar issue to the poster I have is audio 'disappearing' (including mic) after a few days of uptime (and being logged in).

I had no such problems with 11.04. This is a clean install of 11.10.

                                Just putting this out there
