Kubuntu 11.10 is almost here but.....

Since an update earlier this morning :-

    Code:
    paul@DELL:~$ lsb_release -a
    No LSB modules are available.
    Distributor ID: Ubuntu
    Description: Ubuntu 11.10
    Release: 11.10
    Codename: oneiric
So 11.10 is no longer shown as being in development.

These are the bugs that I'm still seeing that may not now be fixed until the next release of either Kubuntu, KDE or LibreOffice.

    Bug 210106 https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=210106
konversation crashes after extended use while being minimised or running in the background. This bug is shown as fixed but the fix has not filtered through to the repositories.

    Bug 275469 https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=275469
Closed windows stay in task-bar, I think we will have to wait until KDE 4.8 for a fix.

    Bug 279026 https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=279026
    or 870887 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...rs/+bug/870887
kstars crashes on start up, not sure when this started but doesn't affect natty. Possibly a configuration file problem as deleting the configuration files allows the program to start until changes are made and the program is restarted but fails. This make the program unusable as the program, need to be configured to take account of the observers geographical location.

    Bug 763474 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...rs/+bug/763474
plasma-desktop crashes on log off. I don't see this crash as often as I used to but it's still there.

    Bug 849508 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...rs/+bug/849508
double clicking on .ods shortcut doesn't load the file. Calc starts but with an empty spreadsheet. Starting Writer by double clicking on a .odt file does work though. Other strange effects are seen as per the bug report. This bug seems to affect just LibreOffice 3.4.x as 3.3.x worked fine. My Natty installation was recently upgraded from 3.3.4 to 3.4.3 and the bug is now seen there too. I have seen a report of this bug on the web but can no longer find it. The fix given was to delete the LibreOffice configuration files but that doesn't work here.

    Bug 849882 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...rs/+bug/849882
krename crashes on start up making the program unusable.

    Bug 876461 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...ce/+bug/876461
    Tooltips unreadable in LibreOffice

So if anyone else is seeing any of these bugs and can add any good information to the bug reports I would be very grateful. For me, Oneiric won't be as good a release as Natty was.

Re: Kubuntu 11.10 is almost here but.....

    Hi...

I think it would help a lot if the developers dropped the "rapid release" system and waited until the vast majority of bugs were worked out before releasing a version.

Since 10.04 LTS was released April of last year, there have been three additional releases...too much, too quick from a development standpoint.

I enjoy the six monthly release cycle a lot but I agree with ardvark it can bring more than a few problems, that being said I'm liking the direction Kubuntu is taking, I love kwin it has more than enough desktop effects for me the inclusion of muon as the default package manager seems a step forward after kpackagekit and the rest of my less than tech loving family like it a lot, I still don't get on with dolphin but it's easy enough to get konqueror as default, as for the rest a big thumbs up from me, I can't wait for the release date later this month so I can upgrade.

The Konversation devs have fixed it in their git tree, but have not released a new version with the fix yet (I do not know if the fix can be patched against the current version or not)

Most likely , though I have not seen it in a while myself.

Might need to file a fresh report, this one is for Natty /kde 4.6, 4.7 fixed this issue for me.

        Bug 849508 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...rs/+bug/849508

        can't reproduce that one.

        Bug 849882 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...rs/+bug/849882
krename crashes on start up making the program unusable.
This one may be fixable, but i don't know much about patching to try and fix it, would be a good learning task. If one of the volunteers that make up the Kubuntu packaging team find the time, maybe someone can pop into irc and poke someone with the info on the fix.

So if anyone else is seeing any of these bugs and can add any good information to the bug reports I would be very grateful. For me, Oneiric won't be as good a release as Natty was.

It may not be, luckily one can still run natty and have kde 4.7.1 (and very soon 4.7.2). I think that outside of Kmail, many will find 11.10 an improvement.

They have been spending a lot of time on getting 4.7.2 ready, and patching kdepim, which I am surprised no one is reporting on here in kfn, as that situation makes all these issues seem small, inmsho Its failure to migrate automatically is the first of many problems that will be causing severe headaches in the next couple of days. I think I will have an entire wiki page dedicated to the kmail1-kmail2 migration. There are so many bug reports on this part of KDE it isn't even funny, though they have pulled in a lot of patches backported from kde 4.7.2 to lessen the literal disaster it was just a few days ago.

Re: Kubuntu 11.10 is almost here but.....

Regarding Kmail 2 it seems a nice improvement over previous version. I am actually using it as my main email client now.

Have to admit I did a clean install as it was just easier.

I like to use IMAP for my email so doing a clean install wasn't much of an issue as all mail is not stored on my PC. 11.10 and Kmail 2 is the first time I've been really successful at getting IMAP to work on Kubuntu.

Now if only my CDs would eject properly and work with Amarok every time it would be a brilliant release.

Do you know if KDE 4.7.2 is going to ship on the final release?, as I see it's currently only available through backports PPA.

no, it can't due to the feature freeeze, but it will likely very soon make it into the normal update repo.

Because of this bug I wont use Kubuntu Oneiric and KDE 4.7. I am deeply disappointed in KDE developers for not taking this bug serious and not fixing it. It has huge amount of votes on bugs.kde.org, it is huge "in your face" bug and I personally cannot believe that KDE 4, three and a half years after initial 4.0 release has this kind of bug..... I don't care about plasma active, nepomuk, akonadi etc untill this kind of bugs aren't fixed.
Why not stop at KDE 4.8 and spend half year or year just fixing damn bugs?

None of the reported issues in the bug report are experienced here on my 11.10 install running KDE 4.7.1. I do note, that in the bug report, svn versions and KDE 4.7.2 are being used.

Hmmm... tomorrow I'll do a clean install from daily build and will do some testing to see if bug is present on clean install.

On the last daily build I tested the window list bug had gone from always to intermittent. I may d/l the 10/10 build and try it again to see how it does for me.

Just a suggestion -- you could replace the taskmanager with this icon task manager:

                        http://kde-look.org/content/show.php...content=144808

there are other replacement task managers as well that might meet your needs. Nothing says you have to use the default one if it is buggy (and it is on my system as well).

                          Hi all...

I found this page (that some of you might have seen) from KDE's blog regarding this issue, although I didn't see anything in terms of immediate workarounds. A poster at the Gentoo forums mentioned that he had to switch to Thunderbird because of this and didn't find what he needed from Evolution and Sylpheed (never heard of that program before.)

I have done 2 clean installs over the past month which solved problems. I sometimes wonder if trouble results from updates to repositories not being complete when I do an update followed by a dist-upgrade. I have experienced the problem of an exited application staying on the taskbar but that has now gone.

Other inconveniences remain such as Krename doesn't work and Kaffeine requires a Digital TV channel to be showing before it can record that channel. I also always get an error starting the system which says "Mail Dispacher Agent: Could not access the outbox folder ... "

I think I can live with these inconveniences in the hope that a solution will soon be forthcoming.

Heh, I thought that (Mail) message indicator was ill configured on my system...
I do not use Kmail and I have now found a solution to stop this annoying message. I found it at http://forum.kde.org/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=86252. What I did to stop this message was to
                              Code:
                              cd /usr/share/akonadi/agents
                              sudo nano maildispatcheragent.desktop
                              I then changed the line
                              Code:
                              X-Akonadi-Capabilities=Unique,Autostart
                              to
                              Code:
                              X-Akonadi-Capabilities=Unique,NoConfig
I then installed akonadiconsole and used it to delete Mail Dispatcher Agent.

I hope that the final release does not require the user to go through this procedure.

                              EDIT:
As it stands at the moment, my outstanding problems are:
                              • krename does not work
                              • Kaffeine does not record Digitlal TV unless the channel is displayed
                              • When printing from LibreOffice, the HP Printer driver does not provide double side printing even though it is defined in the printer settings of the HP Device Manager
                              • avidemux is not available on my 64B system but is available on my 32B system
