    Kaffeine Digital TV Shortcomings

Kaffeine works well with all options except Digital TV. If I want to view a channel, I have to double click the channel for it to start. A single click briefly shows the channel program and then gives a black screen. A double click on the channel will then show the program. This characteristic and what follows, happens on both my 32B desktop and my 64B Laptop. A reinstall makes no difference.

Kaffeine fails to record a Digital TV channel after I have set it up using the option: Television>Program Guide followed by highlighting the program and selecting Record Show. It gives a zero length file. It will record the selected program at the correct time if I then select Digital TV and the channel I wish to record. If I want to do any thing else and not be forced to listen to the current program, I have to turn the sound down. I haven't checked to see if Kaffeine will record multiple programs on different channels.

I would be interested to hear from anyone else regarding their experience with Kaffeine Digital TV. Am the only one with this problem or have others encountered this problem. As the release of 11.10 is not far away, I consider it important that "features" such as this be fixed.

    Re: Kaffeine Digital TV Shortcomings

I've been a kaffeine user (for music) for years, but after it stopped working in Debian Sid, I learned about this:

    http://wm161.net/2011/09/08/phonon-x...non-gstreamer/

    http://lists.kde.org/?l=kde-announce...4384419151&w=2

Kaffeine has a hard dependency on Xine -- if the Xine backend is no longer maintained, I think kaffeine has no future.

For me, the previous version of Kaffeine worked well on 11.04 and since 11.10 has a newer version, I would have thought that it should still work even though xine development has stopped.

Is it at all possible that when Kaffeine was built for 11.10, that something was overlooked? I am wondering if all who use the Digital TV option of Kaffeine have the same problem. Should I therefore be using a different package for Digital TV viewing and recording?

        Re: Kaffeine Digital TV Shortcomings

I have no experience with digital TV on a Linux system, but my general recommendation would be to move to VLC for media playing. I just checked on a fully updated 11.10 Kubuntu system, and VLC does a fine job with music files and video (.flv). I know VLC (in contrast to mplayer and everything that uses xine) is under active development and is well-maintained.

          Re: Kaffeine Digital TV Shortcomings

My Kaffeine problem wasn't with Media Playing. It was only with Digital TV as the title of this posting states. The problems that I am experiencing are, to me, related to the gui. Digital TV works well, it is just that I have to double click on the channel to get it to show the channel and I have to have the channel running for the record to work. Hence the xine aspect is working but the interface has got some shortcomings.
