[solved] KDE running in failsafe mode - no effects

I just realized that on my system, KDE is running in "failsafe mode", which means no effects, themes, etc. I cannot figure out why, or what to do about it.
    Systemsettings > desktop effects
has a checkbox for enabling effects at startup (which isn't working), but no way of turning them on or off. The shortcut (Alt-Shift-F12) does nothing.
There are no errors in /var/log/Xorg.0.log
The "toggle compositing" plasmoid does nothing.

Edit: I just noticed that hitting alt-shift-f12 does produce a momentary flash of desktop effects, but it lasts only a fraction of a second. Still no errors in Xorg.0.log, so maybe not a video driver problem.

Thanks, but it was something really simple.
The session type got changed to failsafe on the greeter screen. Not sure why or how,
but changing back to regular session fixed it.
That's what I get for messing with this late at night.
