    [soapbox] what if...

    .. there wasn't KDE
I've been using Kubuntu as my main distro since 8.04, but due to GTK dependencies I've been working mostly in ubuntu since about a year. I've been running alphas with Kubuntu some years now and I must say even though I just 'went in' on the beta this year - this is the by far the most intuitive, polished and swifty beta I've tried!

I feel that there's been a lot new improvements on kde-looks and KDE/brainstorming that really have made a difference to looks and feel, and it really feels that Kubuntu taken a step towards the idea of the Ubuntu 'just-work' concept without loosing the fragrance of 'one size don't fit all'

Thank you Rog, OpenSource, GG, Snowhog in KFN and all in the Kommunity

Sorry for this post with no issues and no complaints ....the redundancy here is PR

    /Jonas

Quite frankly, I'd go back to the xdm/xterm way of doing things from 15 years ago.

There is just something about the whole cellphone/tablet style interface that doesn't work for me, at all. Maybe if I had a touchscreen, but I don't.

      So would I.

You are free to do so ... I just love KDE and Kubuntu (so do I think you are) and wish to spread the love to all the dev's, this distro made my day, thank you

If there was no KDE I would have adapted over time to suit the OS.
Because there IS a KDE, I adapt the OS to suit me

I see that kind of stuff all the time, but I have mild dyslexia and strabismuss. Makes it hard to type at times.

Every time I get to the point where I have learned a desktop, and am comfortable with it, they change it. And I have to start all over again. I spent a lot of time fine tuning KDE3 and had everything exactly how I wanted it. Bam! KDE4! And it was a mess at first. So I switched to Gnome and Ubuntu. I got very good with this and had everything just as I wanted it. Wow!! Now I have to start all over again with Unity or Gnome3. I am still learning KDE4. So once I have that down, will KDE change everything? I hope not.

I'm a longtime committed KDE user on my desktop(s), but if you liked the Gnome desktop, you might find Xfce attractive. I usually use Xfce when I make a bootable USB stick with Linux -- KDE seems a little "busy" for that kind of purpose, and the Xfce desktop boots up quicker than KDE. Xfce, like Gnome, shows all connected mountable partitions on the desktop, and lets you manually mount and unmount them with a mouse click -- very handy for dealing with strange computers and their disk drives.

I forgot to mention XFCE. I currently run it on what I call my maintenance computer and on my old and slow laptop. Bare bones install on the maintenance computer which I use exclusively for servicing the hard drives of clients computers.

How do you do that? Do you switch to the Xfce desktop first, then use Startup Disk Creator?

I typically run a Debian rolling-release distro called aptosid, which is distributed with both KDE and Xfce desktops: http://aptosid.com/index.php?module=news

But you could do equally well installing Xubuntu, I think: http://www.xubuntu.org/

There are several ways to configure a USB stick with Linux (see "usb-creator", "pendrive linux", "unetbootin", etc.). If the USB flash drive is larger than 2GB, I usually make it dual-purpose by making a FAT32 data partition on the "first" part of it, and then installing a "Live" Linux on a smaller second partition, as described in this guide: http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3117175.0

You can use Startup Disk Creator to create a startup USB disk for any *buntu distribution. Not just the native distribution it is running on. Just point it at the .iso for the desired distribution.

Duh!!! I knew that. Please disregard my brain fart. In fact, I've done it several times. But, at my age, sometimes ideas just don't automatically connect the way they used to. Would you believe I used to have a near photographic memory? It's how I got through grad school with a 3.57 gpa while working full time and supporting my wife and two kids. Now, my wife is my memory. Without her I'd have no mind at all.
