    Successful installation, ATI question

First of all, it seems this is going to be a great release. Did a fresh install of beta 1 and had no problems so far. My experience with 11.04 was less enthusiastic. The only think I would like to see in the final release is an upgrade for rekonq, hoping it will be updated.

I do have one question though. Trying to see which ATI drivers are available for my computer I see one new entry in the list of proprietary drivers. One is ATI (the same as it was until now), the other one is AMD.

    1. Does anybody know what is the difference between the two? Which one is better to use?

    2. How does the new open source driver compare to the proprietary ones? Is it still worth changing the default oss selection?

    Thank you for your answers/thoughts/comments.

    Re: Successful installation, ATI question

AMD owns ATI now for a few years prolly just letting the "ATI' brand die.

i woun't use the properitary driver unless you have a need for it. the main differance is that the properitary driver will give you access to some of the more advanced stuff that you card can do like openGL4 it will also give you a better FPS for some games. also supports some of the bleading edge cards the open driver currently does not yet support.you should know that the open source driver is made now w/ support from amd/ati so the open source driver has been making leeps and bounds in catching up to both the proformace and features of the ati cards,

you can see the stuff currently supported by the open driver (by chipset) you can find that out by looking at lspci or lshw and seeing what chipset it says you video card is it will say something like "ATI RADIEON 4830HD (r730)" that card is an r700 series card.
