setting the quality when ripping audio cd's to mp3?

I've done some google searches, and I've poked around in system settings, and I haven't been able to figure out how to change the bit rate of mp3's that I've ripped. It appears that the default bit rate is 128.

Anyone know how to change this to a higher bit rate?

I'm not prepared to write a tutorial, but my process is to rip to .wav first (i.e. get the full digital waveform), and then for any file that I want to convert to .mp3, use lame.

    Code:
    man lame
will show you the various ways to control the quality, from simple -q0 to absolute setting of your chosen bit rate.

damn you internets>>>> (posted timed out..) anyway....

iirc there was in the "multimedia" kcm a tab for setting the options for ogg and mp3 rips from dolphin. i checked in 11.10 (kde. 4.7.1) and these tabs are no longer there. perhaps there is a kcm that needs to be installed. or those settings were moved elsewhere.

I doubt that your timeouts are an Internet problem. I frequently get them on this website. I think it is a problem with SMF and how it reacts to mouse clicks. When ever it happens I can open another tab and browse any other site just fine, but if I try to browse this site with the second tab the busy icon loops on the second tab as well. Eventually, after it times out, if I click the post button or one of the other buttons the site reacts normally. I believe that the vBulletin form software on our new web site won't have this problem.

I was hoping to find a global setting. But I followed your suggestion and set the bitrate in K3b's options window for Lame.
