The mandatory LAN connection should be changed so that anyone who has only a wireless connection will be able to install the O/S. As it is now it freezes up without the LAN connection

Re: A Suggestion
That would be like trying to lift yourself off the ground by pulling on your boot straps.
That you are installing the OS means that you don't have a desktop running and therefore KNetworkManager is not running. So, the ESSID hasn't been selected, the type of connection indicated, and the password has not been entered. The wired connection, on the other hand, connects instantly because it doesn't need the apps or the info that KNetworkManager needs.
Wicd doesn't need a GUI desktop. It's CLI works very well in a shell. But, what does a shell need to run?

Re: A Suggestion
I am currently installing 11.10 without a connection, so perhaps there is some sort of bug. I am using the latest daily build on my ancient Compaq laptop. The connection is good mostly for adding in language support, installer updates, and the restricted-extras/third party stuff (flash, etc iirc)
Another option would be to boot into the live session and then set up your wireless, then begin the install. Also do make sure you have not checked the 'install these third party software' box, which is one place that could cause Ubiquity to hang if it can't get online to install those bits

Re: A Suggestion
I have installed many, many kubuntu installs without a LAN connection and/or without any internet connection. I just installed the daily live from 2 days ago without any LAN or net connection.
I dunno what this thread means

Re: A Suggestion
As I mentioned, I do wonder if those with this issue have checked the
"Install third party software" option, and the installer hangs if it can't connect. I think it is supposed to time out, but I am not sure what the timeout is.
In any case, it is a bug of some sort as it shouldn't alt the install process. Heck the bug might not have anything to do with networking at all, for that matter.
But ah, the joys of alpha releases sure do keep it intersting

Re: A Suggestion
I think that rather than the 'Install third party software' creating the described issue, it's the 'Download updates while installing' that is the bug-a-boo. With that checked, an active connection to the Internet is implied, and I don't think there is a conditional check to ensure there is if this is checked.Windows no longer obstructs my view.

Thank you for the correction, I didn't see your previous statement.

Re: A Suggestion
This morning I installed 11.10 daily build with the LAN connected, I tried the test setup and it was OK, it saw the wireless and I connected the wireless and disconnected the LAN to use the wireless that was connected, it froze up solid. Still the same way no change. Hey Greygeek I will follow your idea and only use the LTS versions from now on.

Re: A Suggestion
Richard, I don't think regressing all the way to 10.04 is totally required but when you're using the Testing releases like 11.10 you're bound to run into problems - that's why they have testing versions, so we in the real world can test them.
I wouldn't recommend any alpha, beta, or RC version to anyone who's not prepared for some problems.

Re: A Suggestion
I have a new Toshiba C655D that has a rtl8188ce wireless chipset in it. That is the problem, it is connected to the LAN port somehow. in both 11.04 and 11.10. That is why I went back to 10.04 which I love and it never gives me problems for my work machines. Maybe by the time the new LTS comes out they may fix this problem, I have submitted a bug on this as others have the same problem with the newer wireless cards
