    Unknown Error in KpackageKit

    Hello

I've been getting this error in KpackageKit. All it shows is an error alert saying "An unknown error happened", when I click on "software updates".
If I run it from the command line, I get this:
    Code:
    sudo kpackagekit --updates
Error: "/var/tmp/kdecache-eric" is owned by uid 1000 instead of uid 0.
eric@Eric-PC:~$ Application asked to unregister timer 0x5000004 which is not registered in this thread. Fix application.
QInotifyFileSystemWatcherEngine::addPaths: inotify_add_watch failed: No such file or directory
QFileSystemWatcher: failed to add paths: /home/eric/.config/ibus/bus
Because of this, I'm not seeing the updates notification icon in the tray anymore.
I haven't done any relevant change in my system. It was working until a few days ago.
I know I can use other tools to update, but I'm used to work with Kpackagekit. Any idea of what's wrong? Thanks in advance.

    Re: Unknown Error in KpackageKit

    Code:
    sudo kpackagekit --updates
Error: "/var/tmp/kdecache-eric" is owned by uid 1000 instead of uid 0.
you do not need to run kpackagekit with sudo privilieges, it will prompt for it when it is actually needed.

Also, do NOT run gui applications using sudo - you can get errors such as you see, and can possibly lead to file permission issues. Use 'kdesudo' instead.

But as I said initially, do not run kpackagekit with sudo, or even kdesudo. It is completely unnecessary.

Now, kpk has really useless error messages, so sometimes the only way to check what the problem is is to run apt from a terminal:

    Code:
    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
This will give good error messages and warnings that will help pinpoint the problem area.

      Thanks for your answer.
Usually I don't run kpk using the command line. I just did it this time, to see the errors appearing at the prompt. I always run it using the kde menu in graphic mode. In fact, I usually run it by clicking on the notification icon in the task bar. But as I said, since this problem appeared, I'm not seeing this notification icon anymore.
I already run apt. I don't remember exactly the messages I saw (I'm not at home at this moment), but I will run it again tonight and post the result here.
      Thanks.

        Re: Unknown Error in KpackageKit

        Hello. I'm back.
This is what I get when I enter 'kpackagekit' in the console:

        Code:
        eric@Eric-PC:~$ kpackagekit
eric@Eric-PC:~$ Application asked to unregister timer 0x77000008 which is not registered in this thread. Fix application.
QInotifyFileSystemWatcherEngine::addPaths: inotify_add_watch failed: No such file or directory
QFileSystemWatcher: failed to add paths: /home/eric/.config/ibus/bus
And this is what I get from apt-get update:
        Code:
        eric@Eric-PC:~$ sudo apt-get update

(I'm not sure, but I guess there are not many packages to be updated, because I had just executed gksu, which updated a few programs).

By the way, Synaptic and gksu seem to be working fine. But I still want to fix kpk.

One last thing: I tried uninstalling and re-installing kpackagekit (with apt-get). But the error is still there...

            Re: Unknown Error in KpackageKit

there is nothing wrong with kpk as far as i can tell from the messages 0 which are more informational in nature. Can you still use it to install or remove programs? Other than the error in e konsole, what specifically is happening to KPK? I don't have a Natty install to see what is happening here.

Also, gksu is simply a Gnome equivalent to kdesudo, if you have both installed either one can be used to run gui applications with Admin privileges. ie : kdesudo synaptic works much the same as gksu synaptic.

removing/reinstalling usually does absolutely nothing to help fix things in linux.

              Sorry for my late response.
claydoh: I cannot use it to install programs. As soon as I click on "software updates" or in any category, or I search for a program, I get the error. Look at this screenshot:
              http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...ner/errork.jpg

Besides from this, I'm not getting the updates notification icon in the taskbar.

                Re: Unknown Error in KpackageKit

So from the lack of errors in apt, or synaptic, and minimal info from kpk running it from the terminal I don't see what the problem could be - kpk is not throwing out any useful errors

The only thing I could find that seems to help is to use synaptic to remove kpk and any packagekit things you have installed, then reinstall them. Which does nothing to ais in finding what the actual problem is

I removed kpk with apt-get. This also removed some other related packages. I re-installed, but the problem remains.
Well, it's not the end of the world... anyway, I guess if I upgrade to 11.10 next month, I guess this would fix the problem, right?
