<Abandoned> Ubuntu-one - available to US?

Why or why am I having to write this? I just don't get it.

Kubuntu has/does not have access to Ubuntu-one? Who knows? Why is it a secret? This is plain stupid, and I don't really have time for that. They're going after Windows users - that's obvious at the Uvuntu-one website, but we're...what? Invisible?

In the packages, I see "ubuntu-one-control-panel" - and installed it...and of course it just disappeared. No menu entry, no instructions anywhere that I can see. If you know what to do, fine. otherwise you're in application hell. Again. And so shall we be a niche OS for all eternity.

Digging around a bit I locate "file:///usr/share/doc/ubuntuone-control-panel/README", which says "This is the Ubuntu One Control Panel." Now that's really fine work. Helpful, too.

If anyone can give me the missing clue what to do at this point, I'll invest a little more time in this...once I get over being really pissed off.

======== UPDATE for those who follow after me... ======

The problem, as I think I've already made clear, is that we KDE folks appear to Canonical to be fishfood , AND, if I may say so, too many of us accept it that it's OK not to have clear pathways to the functionality which we seek when we come to computers in general and linux specifically. This is a shame, in my eyes. I've never found this to be OK. If you program it, document it. Period.

I did additional searches of the forums, and discovered this thread - http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...0169#msg270169 - by searching for "Ubuntu One". There I learn that the control panel launch script is file:///usr/bin/ubuntuone-control-panel-gtk. Fire that up and things start happening.

Now...I'm still majorly pissed off, for the simple reason that functionality one cannot get to simply doesn't exist. Humanity needs more functionality, not more nerd-games. So, I'm going to look for a way to make a path to this for the next guy/gal, given that access to a Ubuntu One account IS not a trivial functionality.

I'll see what I can do - maybe some wiki somewhere? Wikipedia (yeah, I like that).

On the page they detail the free and paid subscription services:https://one.ubuntu.com/services/, they state:
Only on Ubuntu
And at other places Android and iPhone and iPad are mentioned.

Kubuntu isn't mentioned.

The service is automatically in Ubuntu 10.10 and higher. The FAQ is here.

EDIT: (after your update)
I was wrong in my interpretation of the operating systems and desktops allowed to use Ubuntu One. The necessary files do install on Kubuntu and work fine. Here is what I did:

I decided to load the ubuntu one files using Synaptic. I then ran ubuntuone-launch from the konsole.
That loaded ubuntuone_syncd.
Then I opened FF and browsed to https://one.ubuntu.com, which allowed me to log in with my LaunchPad account. That took me to the UbuntuOne Dashboard. I clicked on the "Files" icon and chose the "Upload File" option. A dialog opened up and I browsed to a file and clicked the upload button on the dialog. It was uploaded.

Bottom line. Just install the three UbuntuOne files in the repository, and their dependencies, open your browser, browse to the one.ubuntu.com website and create your account. Log in, and you are set to go. Your browser is your user interface. The "More" option at the end of a file listing gives more options.

Now I have to figure out what I want to upload into my free 5GB of storage.

Well, aside from the overt ignoring of we KDE folks, and the fact the "only on Ubuntu" is plainly NOT true, there's the fact that in a lot of the documentation one can find for various things a significant amount of the time Ubuntu means _buntu, and one can reasonably assume this.

I DO have it running, though it wasn't fun getting here. I don't see any good reason for that. How much time does it take for someone somewhere simply to indicate what the launch script is? It's that simple.

Unacceptable, simply unacceptable.

Re: <SOLVED> Ubuntu-one - available to US?

Well, I did, but I guess in an unexpected place. I updated my very first post, so that all the information is in one place and one doesn't have to read the whole thread. Seemed like a good idea...but didn't work for you, did it. Hmmmm...

Quoting from that post: "I did additional searches of the forums, and discovered this thread - http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...0169#msg270169 - by searching for "Ubuntu One". How's it working? Smooth as silk, or as Dropbox (a more relevant comparison), so far. I need to install it on two other computers, then live with it for a little while. 5GB of free cloud storage is pretty nice, although 50 would be better. Ubuntu One's price for extra storage in 20GB units is but $3/month, which isn't bad if you really need what cloud storage gives you. I believe Amazon's offering a pile of free storage too, and I'm about to go check that out.

I haven't yet found if U-1 has the file restoration functionality that Dropbox has, wherein changes are kept and any previous version of a file can be recovered.

Finally, there's this: Cloud storage has an unexpected virtue - it appears to save significant amounts of energy - see http://googlemade.blogspot.com/2011/...er-in-web.html. As I said earlier, this is not a trivial functionality. The path to it should be easy and clear.

....
FYI, the "ubuntuone-control-panel-gtk" is not part of the installed files on Kbuntu 10.04, nor is it in the repository.

Also, the "Notes" part works with Tomboy, which I won't install because it is a Mono app.

How ridiculous is it that they have a winblows client but no KDE? I guess that have to service the crowd willing to pay first...

Re: <SOLVED> Ubuntu-one - available to US?

Well yes. And it's a kind of backhanded complement, if you think about it. The Ubuntu user is more apt to use their computing power in some kind of handheld with synced music from the cloud, and there's money in that. We KDE folks invest OUR time do REAL work with real computers, and listen to music off CDs, like God intended, by cracky. No money in that. 'Streamed music'....how appalling. Probably rock and roll, at that..

By the way, U-1 isn't working for me yet. I keep getting a sync error - something about not being able to read a value, and getting a DBusError. Never had that problem with DropBox. I posted a question to the relevant community forum, where there appeared to be a lot of sync error questions. We'll see what comes of it.

Re: <SOLVED> Ubuntu-one - available to US?

I've abandoned Ubuntu One. The sync from my local files to the cloud folder set to receive them never got going. I don't have time for another wild goose chase. I have work to do. Maybe other people can get this working. I hope they can.

Right now I'm looking at Wuala.com's software and service. Looks very promising. Will give it a try.
