HELP! My desktop and taskbar etc have all disapeared!

I installed ubuntu 11.04.Unhappy with Unity, I installed all the kde/kubuntu packges, and updated to kde 4.7 All went fine, been using for a few weeks.

Today I boot up and after the KDM login I get nothing but the default plasma wallpaper and an instance of Chromium. I have no window manager, so I can't resize or move this window. I have no taskbar, no launcher, none of my widgets, NOTHING. Just the oxygen wallpaper and a chromium with no window manager.

The only recent change was last night I was annoyed that Thunderbird kept launching Chrome instead of Chromium, my default browser. So I removed chrome. Then it started using firefox. So I removed firefox (all this in synaptic).

Load my computer today and now it's in this state.
ps -ef |grep kwin and |grep plasma
show NOTHING running with those names. (I used ctrl-alt-f1 to get to a shell).
I tried renaming my ~/.kde to ~/.kde-back and rebooting and no change, and no new .kde was created.

Re: HELP! My desktop and taskbar etc have all disapeared!

I also tried using adduser to create a new account. When I log in with it, EXACT same problem.

Is there some way I can make apt-get reinstall all the kde 4.7 stuff? apt-get doesn't seem to have a "reinstall" option.

Thanks! But is there a metapackage to reinstall? When I upgraded kubuntu 11.04 to kde 4.7 I just added some backport repository then did apt-get update then upgrade. Something like 400 packages were installed. If no metapackage, can anyone tell me where the full package list is?

And keep in mind I'm doing this from a command prompt only, I can't launch synaptic or kpackagekit as I have just a web browser on my screen, nothing else.

Does Alt+f2 (krunner) work? If it does, you can use it to launch programs, like "kdesudo synaptic"

I'd start with installing/reinstalling 'kubuntu-desktop' it should make sure you have everything that is installed by default.

[FIXED] Re: HELP! My desktop and taskbar etc have all disapeared!

No, alt-f2 wouldn't work, I tried. I was using ctrl-alt-f1 to jump to a prompt to do commands. At the kdm screen I also tried the failsafe mode, no change, and I also tried Cassic mode (since I had normal Ubuntu on here as well) and even that still started KDE with just a single chromium browser open and no window manager or anything else.
So I reinstalled the meta package, I forget what it was called. kde-full or kde-base or something. Anyway it downloaded and reinstalled all 403MB of KDE 4.7 -- and the exact same problem was still happening after that.

Since it's a recent install, I just reformatted and clean installed kubuntu 11.04 (instead of Ubuntu 11.04 then putting Kubuntu on top) and now it works fine. I liked having both normal Ubuntu and Kubuntu on my system at once but that must have broken something. KDE 4.7 is sweet, seems very stable, so there's no need for gnome/compiz/etc. on this system I've decided.
