Huh!? Purging of a package/packages results in the installation of others, including a complete suite (LibreOffice)!!! What's with that?

    OK wierd!

I opened up my system and found myspell-us wasn't installed but -gb, -au and -zb were.

If I attempt to install -us I get removal of hunspell-en-us, language-support-en, and language-support-writing-en and then installation of libreoffice-common,-cor and -style-human.

    Very odd

I think it very unusual that removing/purging any package would result in the installation of anything! I had removed/purged LibreOffice packages before I simulated the purging of myspell-en-za myspell-en-gb. You can imagine my suprise to find that apt wanted to (re)install libreoffice* again!!

Re: Simulate purge reports installation of packages!!

There are some goofy dependencies between language packs and various versions of Libre and Open Office. Attempting to remove non-US English dictionaries triggers some other dependent to then walk its map and force the installation of seemingly unrelated packages.

Sometimes I think package maintainers try to do too much. As an American English speaker, for instance, I don't need Australian or South African spelling dictionaries. But I can never see, to completely eliminate all of them...

back in my PCLinuxOS days - they had Thai language as a dependency of the whole KDE desktop.

Obviously, the developer was from Thailand...
