    Odd Drive Names in /Media

Back on 10.10, drives mounted with realistic names such as Disk, Disk-1, USB, etc. In 11.04, those same drives mount with very crytpic numerical names, such as 3240E30140E2CB2. How can I get these drives mounted with names rather than numbers?

Drives? Hard disk drives, USB sticks, or what? If they're appearing in /media, then you must be referring to USB-connected storage devices. If you want something meaningful to appear when you plug one in, then probably you should give it a volume label:

    http://tldp.org/HOWTO/html_single/Pa.../#volumelabels

You can also use Gparted to apply a label to existing filesystems.

or if you mean to set them up to be mounted in /etc/fstab, then you need this:

Thanks for the response, Dibl. The drives in question are separate partitions, one being Windows 7 and the other being where I store everything (music, photos, etc...). I'm not looking to rename the partitions. Another example are USB drives and my Droid.

On 10.10, these partitions and devices were all mounted with realistic names, such as Android, or USB, or Disk. As I mentioned, now they have very cryptic names. I assume something besides fstab is naming them, as none of these partitions or drives appear in that file.

What else could be naming them?

the new mount point names are baised on UUID of the disk /partition . those are in HEX 0-F , if you want friendly names then you should label your partitions. (and no you dont' have to format them to add a label).
