    (SOLVED) Desktop Search - Google desktop broken

    Ok, I really really like the desktop search stuff. I use OpenOffice (LibreOffice) as my sole office suite and have for years. So I have a lot perhaps even 1,000+ documents. I need a desktop search thing that indexes my files and will let me search very quickly and find a document I need. Google Desktop has always done this for me. However Google Desktop doesn't seem to be working for me. It has indexed my files (I assume) when I click on preferences it doesn't do anything. When I click on the icon by the clock it opens the search window, and I search and it never opens a browser and displays the results. I have searched and oddly can't find any info on the web about this problem. Also, it is hard to search for I mean look at the search terms, "google desktop" + search + linux + "doesn't open" or something similar yields a lot of worthless results. Soo, if we cannot fix the problem, I very open to using a new app, but it must index my OpenOffice files, and would like it to index pdf as well. Any thoughts? I remember visiting this topic several years ago, so I'm hoping something has come onto the scenes that I haven't seen.

    Well, you can alwasy enable Nepomuk and/or Strigi, the default 'desktop search' utilities in KDE.
    Windows no longer obstructs my view.

      I did actually enable strigi for my desktop search and within 12 hours of doing so my .xsessions-errors file grew to 28GB in size. I posted about this before here: http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3116715.0 So, I disabled strigi, and am without a desktop searching tool. If this issue can be fixed that would be great and I wouldn't mind using that. Although I'm not sure that it indexes Open Office files. I will continue searching.

        I've been using recoll for years now. It indexes every kind of document you can think of, archives, etc. You can search for just one word or for a phrase. If you want it searches for 'house' and 'houses' etc.
        I've been trying strigi yesterday, first time in a long time. For some reason it indexed everything four times. The database was bigger as the indexed files.
        So I'll stick with recoll.
        I index once a week by hand, recoll indexes very fast. There is a demon too for realtime indexing, but I don't use that, so I don't know how the demon works.
        If you want to try recoll, you'll need some helper programs. Once it finishes indexing, you can lookup in the menu what programs it's missing and you should install to help indexing.

          Wow, thanks for that! I will certainly check it out. Looks promising. Couldn't a crontab be setup for a once a week index update? I installed it and will be checking it out. Thanks.

            Ok, installed recoll, indexed my files, and did a quick search for something simple. Not one OpenOffice Document turned up. Lots of html, even a PDF and even my Thunderbird email inbox turned up. I'm very impressed with recoll. But I really need OpenOffice docs. After looking more closely on their web site it says I need a few additional things to be able to search for OpenOffice docs. I installed modxslt-tools and iconv-bin but I'm not sure if those are the right packages. I'm pretty happy over all with this recoll. Very simple setup, and quick and easy usage. Let me know what I need to index OpenOffice files, of if those are it. Thanks!!

              Nevermind! /home/user/.recoll contains a missing file and tells you everything that needs to be installed to index what you want. Very impressed. Installed that stuff and going to re-index.

                If you open recoll (after indexing) and look in Menu -> Show missing helpers, it shows a list of mime-types it couldn't index. And suggestions for apps to install.
                If you look for the apps and/or mime-types, you'll probably find them (almost) all in the repositories.
                I too really need indexed files. On my system openoffice is also indexed, so it is possible.

                  Thanks for this app recommend. I'm very pleased with it and think it is going to meet my needs better than anything else I have found, of course once I get the proper things setup. It is a very nicely made app, and I like the option of real time indexing, or just indexing at a specific time it is set to re-index. That is probably the option I will go with, I don't need 'real time' indexing.

                    As a side note. I had to remove antiword because it was hanging up in the indexing. I don't have that many word docs, so it really doesn't matter much. I saw a workaround, but seemed easier to just dump that package and not worry about it.
