how do I get java working in FireFox 5? - Solved

Before you jump all over me for not searching - I DID. After a minute or two, the forums search engine dies and leaves me with a blank screen. So I'm starting a new thread trusting that it's a new subject.

I cannot get Java working under Firefox.

Yes I have Javascript turned on.

But when I view a web site that uses an applet using Java, the applet doesn't appear and I get nothing.

I tried searching plugins and it appears that FireFox 5 doesn't have a working Java plugin.

    Is this true?

I cannot imagine the Firefox people releasing a new version in which there is no working Java plugin.

So how do I get a Java plugin working in Firefox 5

Do I have to revert back to version 4.x where Java worked?

PS: checked under Synaptic and the Java run time, the jre, is installed.

make sure that the package icedtea-plugin is installed. This is the actual browser plugin needed to run java in firefox

This is assuming you have the icedtea jre installed, which usually is the case

Ran Synaptic and icedtea-jre was installed, but the icedtea plugin was not installed. Why one was and not the other seems rather odd. Installed the plugin with Synaptic and restarted FF5 and now the Java applet works.

      Thanks.!.!
