Shotwell cannot play videos in KDE

For various reasons I have finally given up on Digikam and moved to Shotwell.

The pictures side of things is fine but it will not play imported videos from my camera or mobile phone.
The vids are in various formats (avi, 3gp, mp4) which are claimed to be supported by Shotwell and the same vids DID play last time I tried in Gnome.

Clicking on one of these videos pops up this message:
"Shotwell was unable to play the selected video:
No application is registered as handling this file".

I have tried setting the associations to various apps (totem, smplayer, vlc, dragon player) in KDE settings to no avail.

    Any ideas?

I'm running Lucid 10.04 and both Digikam and Shotwell work well with my system.

My suspicion is that your video chip is the problem. What is your video chip and which driver module did Upstart load for you? (lspci and lsmod while show you these)

Chip is Intel HD integrated (Core i3 cpu) and uses i915 module.

I don't see that is the problem though. It's not that shotwell isn't playing the vids, it's that it can't seem to launch anything to play them since they play in an external player.

The vids mentioned work in every other app imaginable and they do play in shotwell on gnome.
Digikam also plays them with no problems (I just find it overly bloated for my needs).

My Intel Mobil Series 4 Express video chip also uses i915, and my video works GREAT! So, I suspect that you're right, it is not a problem with your video.

I don't use Shotwell but I did some googling on it for you. Lucas Beeler, a Shotwell developer, when asked why Shotwell didn't play videos, even though there was a menu that gave the "Play Video" option, www.nabble.com/Shotwell-Photo-gt-Play-video-td31312.html]he replied[/url]:
        > I think this is useless because in photo view there's no video to play D: / Is this an useless voice?

This is something that we on the Shotwell team discussed for more than a few minutes. ;-) The rationale for including "Play Video" in the Photos menu even on the "Photos" page and graying it out is as follows. On all pages that contain mixed media types (e.g., tag and event pages) "Play Video" always appears in the "Photos" menu. That may not be the best place for it (and indeed, it's not the most discoverable thing -- an item pertaining to videos in the "Photos" menu -- go figure), but that's where its ended up. Hence, because it's not so easily discoverable, we wanted it to appear (albeit sometimes grayed out) on all media pages, even those containing exclusively photos, to help users learn where it is.

Nevertheless, you've brought up a good point and I think we should think about it. I've opened a ticket that addresses this and some other media-type related menu issues here:
        http://trac.yorba.org/ticket/3045
That "Bug" was posted 6 months ago, and there's been no response on the bugzilla.

21 Months ago Bug #855 was ticketed.
Shotwell should be able to import videos as well as photos from a camera, and should be able to show videos in the photo list. We could play videos either inside Shotwell (preferred) or by launching an external video player such as Totem.
11 Months ago, another Shotwell developer, Adam, promised:
Yes - we do plan to copy all video files even if we don't have GStreamer codecs that can play them. Once again, this functionality will not be in 0.7, but will be in the 0.8 release later this fall.
        ...
Thanks for all the comments on this ticket. As you all know videos are a top priority for 0.8!
8 months ago,in response to another user's question, yet another Shotwell developer, Jim, said:
... when you import videos via "Mass Storage Camera" in Shotwell, that's going through gphoto2, and all its benefits come into play. When you go through the file system (i.e. File -> Import or drag-and-drop), we have fewer tools at our utilization for fetching video metadata.
That was the last activity on Bug #855.

Six months ago this thread remarked that
"Shotwell doesn’t play video… yet. Currently it just imports videos, and plays them using the default video program (Totem on Ubuntu) when you double click them.".
So, apparently there is a menu preference setting that allows you to chose which video player client you want to use, OR, it is hard coded to play Totem. Do you have Totem installed? If not you can install it from the repository.

Well clearly the video function is not really fully functional but it should certainly play in totem at least, which IS installed

If you right click on a video thumbnail, does it offer you the option of "Open with...", from which you can choose a video player?

No, right-click doesn't respond in any way.

In any case, there are a couple of other problems I am having running shotwell in KDE.

I have decided to return to Digikam for now and will look into shotwell again some other time
