It has been probably over a year since I last used compiz, but as I recall, it was necessary to run the fusion icon, which would park itself on the KDE panel, and then to right-click it and select "kwin" or "compiz" (obviously you want compiz). Then you also had to select a window decorator -- I used to use emerald, but I don't know whether it is still in the *buntu repos or not. If you didn't get the window decorator right, your windows would have no title bar.
