[SOLVED] Could not open package cache

Hi all:

Here is the problem: I cannot do the Software Updates. When I try I get a new window with this message:
No package cache is available - System Settings.
The package list needs to be rebuilt. This should have been done by the backend automatically.

I discovered this problem when I tried to install "libdvdread4" via KPackageKit and I couldn't find this package. I tried doing it (installation) via Terminal and I got this:

~$ sudo apt-get install libdvdread4
Reading package lists... Error!
E: Encountered a section with no Package: header
E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/archive.canonical.com_ubuntu_dists_natty_partner_b inary-i386_Packages
E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.

I would appreciate your help!

Make sure that you don't (still) have the CD as an active repository. Open KPackageKit and look at the sources. IF the CD is still active, deactivate it by commenting it out. KPackageKit is supposed to perform updates to the package cache any time you make changes to the repository entries. But I like to make sure it happens from a console, so close KPackageKit and open a console and type:

sudo apt-get update

This will ensure that the package cache is up to date.

The CD should not be an active repository because I updated from Kubuntu 10.10. Actually the CD installation was done on Kubuntu 9.04 and from that I did the updates till Kubuntu 11.04. The CD is not active.

I have found the answer to the problem from "jabrown65" in ubuntuforums. Here is the answer:

sudo rm /var/lib/apt/lists/* -vf
