Akonadi issues

Since late last week when I logon, Akonadi hangs the machine. Running 'top' has this output:

If I don't 'kill -9' the processes quickly my mouse begins to freeze up, I can no longer even ssh into the machine and the disk led is pretty much permanently lit. The same processes start when I try to open kontact.

Does anyone have any ideas what the problem is and how I might resolve it?
