Lockup upon boot after upgrade to nvidia 275.09.07

Ok, here I go again. I upgraded from 10.10 to 11.04 and my screen stopped responding right at the login screen where the icons go through their appearing and all is fine until it gets to the K logo and it freezes just as the K icon is appearing but the sound activates and my wifi light is flashing so it appeared that kubuntu was running but I got no desktop. I had this same problem after an nvidia update to driver 270 from 260 in 10.10. So I went and reinstalled the nvidia 260 driver (which worked in 10.10) but now it locks up at the Kubuntu screen with the dots on it. All the dots are filled in but I can not get to a cli screen. How can I get to the cli before it locks up? I tried the escape key but it does nothing. ctrl+alt+f1 does nothing either. I can't do anything without being able to get to the cli. How can I do it?

Choose the recovery option on the Grub menu - the second line from the top.

I can't get to the Grub menu that's one of my problems. How do I do that?

When you power on your PC, and after you see the BIOS 'splash' screen, hold down SHIFT to display the hidden menu during boot. This is assuming you are using Grub2. If still using Grub legacy, then hold down the ESC key.

Well the ESC key didn't work so I suppose it Grub2. I'll try SHIFT and report back. Thank you.

The SHIFT key worked to get me to the Grub menu. I was able to get in console and purge nvidia. I can now boot into 11.04 in low graphics mode. I tried reinstalling 260.19.44 but it won't do anything but go to the screen telling me kubuntu is running in low graphics mode. I tried all the selections and nothing but low graphics. I purged nvidia again and installed 270.41.06 and it goes to the icon loading screen and as soon as the K starts to fade in the screen locks but you can hear the startup music it appears I'm booted up but locked on the screen. It is definitely the nvidia driver. Does anyone know what else I can try. Thanks

Re: Lockup upon boot after upgrade

It appears (according to the bug reports) the nvidia driver 270. is having a problem with the xorg 1.10 and the drivers 260 will not work on xorg 1.10 and 270 will not work on xorg-server 1.9. Would downgrading to 1.9 and using 260 driver as suggested on the bug reports work on 11.04? If so, would downgrading remove the 1.10 xorg-server and is this a good idea? Any help appreciated.

That is not the case with Debian -- I am presently running driver ver. 270-41-06 on a 2.6.38 kernel and xorg is:

                    Code:
                    root@aptosidbox:/home/don# apt-cache policy xorg*
                    xserver-xorg-core:
                     Installed: 2:1.10.1-2
                     Candidate: 2:1.10.1-2
Can you point me to the bug reports -- is it only *buntu that has this problem?

Re: Lockup upon boot after upgrade

It seems to be a problem with different distros as well. I do know it's definitely a problem with the geforce 7300 series. In the nvidia forums it's all over the place about the problems. Seems different problems with different cards but pretty much the same problem on the affected cards. I just hope it's fixed soon and not have to downgrade to get 11.04 working again.

Well the downgrade did not go well at all. Computer freezes at the Kubuntu screen with the dots on it and won't do anything. I find this so ridiculous just because of the xorg and nvidia conflict. Now what to do?

Re: Lockup upon boot after upgrade

Well I decided to downgrade to 10.10 using this method.....

                          http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QGnsYuWS0xY

It worked pretty well. It took me back to 10.10 just like a new install except my settings were still there. I had to get rid of the nouveau crap again and install nvidia 260.19.06. I also had to reinstall all my installed programs. Now I'm completely back to 10.10 and it's actually faster than before.

My thanks to all on this forum that tried to help me with this and especially to OSGUI on youtube for the great video.

I just tried to upgrade my nvidia driver on 11.04 and I still have the same problem as before. Just as the plymouth screen gets to the K icon and it starts to fade in it locks my screen but my computer has booted and I can hear the login music. I can't believe this problem still exists. Does anyone know how I can fix this. I really want the nvidia driver. Thank you.
