[SOLVED] Flash not working on 64-bit

For the first time in several years I have installed a 64-bit version of a linux distro (kubuntu natty).
The number one reason I have always stuck with 32-bit in the past is flash player was always flaky.

Well after this fresh install, the first problem I have hit is of course flash.
It IS installed, I have double checked and also removed and reinstalled but every page with flash tells me I need to upgrade my flash player.
It's the same in all browsers.

Well it seems to be down to kpackagekit being crappy.

After several cycles of install/remove, I removed flash plugin again and tried installing from the command line and now it's working.

It's better than earlier versions, but still not 100%. I don't use any package manager to install/remove packages - I do so from the console using apt-get (others might use aptitude). Just my preference.

Same problem on 64bits.

Solved with this on terminal:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:sevenmachines/flash && sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install flashplugin64-installer

Have you tried the flash aid extension for firefox:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/fir...don/flash-aid/
basically inspects your systems and fetches flash for you via apt-get ( i think ) also un-installs any other stuff that you dont need

natman, does flash-aid work with 64-bit? I have seen it reported in the Ubuntu forums that it works great for 32-bit, but not 64...

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:sevenmachines/flash && sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install flashplugin64-installer

Yup, thanks larbac - I vastly prefer the cmd line for this stuff than guis or extensions. Much more precise and clear.

Flash runs very well on 64 bit...The problem on Kubuntu 11.04 is although Kpackagekit does an excellent job on other programs, when installing Kubuntu Restricted Extras, it is better to do it with Package Manager and then Flash will install correctly on the first try...

If you install the restricted extras with KPackageKit then the best way to get the Flash working is to re-install it using Package Manager instead of KPackageKit...that will get it going too...

I found all this out on several live cd runs of Kubuntu 11.04

Unfortunately, I can't actual INSTALL 11.04 because of the new kernel's bug causing greatly increased power consumption, overheating and continuous fan running on my laptop... until they get it fixed...They could be up to Kubuntu 11.10 by THAT time

i'm going to have to re-visit this thread when i get home...

installed Kubuntu 11.04 64bit just yesterday on a spare machine, and have not been able to get flash working to save my life. quite a frustrating thing...

thanks to the above posters for suggestions. i'll reply with what worked for me.

+1 for FlashAid firefox add-on. Worked fine on Kubuntu 64-bit for me and it will notify of flash updates. Doesn't get a whole lot easier.

Worked like a champ for me as well! Gnash just wouldn't cut it for my online crossword puzzle site, which I use as the litmus test for working Flash. The flashplugin-installer in the repositories didn't work on that site as it should. I was almost going to give up on Flash on my new 64-bit laptop. Now Flash works just like it should. Life is good again. 8)
