    Re: Kubuntu 11.04 sucks

I've been an Ubuntu fanboy for several years now, and for the first time I have chosen Kubuntu over Ubuntu as my OS of choice on my netbook and work computer. I love it. I had installed Ubuntu 11.04 with Unity, and let me tell you that Unity is a POS. I tried several other distros just to see what's out there, but after trying Kubuntu 11.04 I'm set now.
    Great, great OS.

Haha I tried it too. Couldn't get it off my puter fast enough!! I think that's the dumbest move ubuntu ever made.

I wouldn't go as far as saying that 11.04 generally "sucks". It's pretty and slick - when it works.
I've already reinstalled 10.10 on my laptop, though - several issues, wireless and usb being the worst.

It's still on my htpc, although I have some quite grave issues there as well: repeated partial freezes (esp. Firefox often "hesitates" for 10-15 secs), "snow", and lots of total X freezes when changin window sizes in Smplayer.
But since I suspect that these problems are related to the Nvidia video card, I will try with another card before I decide if I'm going back to 10.10 on this machine as well.

I may also mention that my brother-in-law has reinstalled 10.10 on both his desktop and laptop.

So, yes, there are a lot of issues with 11.04 that weren't present in 10.10.

Probably because Unity was made for people who don't know computers and those who do don't like the hand-cuffs.

I think you're right. I have to to a lot more tweaking and configuring than unity allows.

              0. BUrn a copy of the live cd are your problems present there? if not then move on if so then you might have a firmware issue (try a live debian cd w/o non-free frimware. see #3 if its firmware)

              1. that machine has some broken packages? run (from recovery mode or a failsafe session) sudo dpkg --configure -a . this wil hopefully fix your broken packages. and you might be able to boot

              2. if you have the properiatary driver for your video remove it. (use jockey-text from a cli to remove it

              3. firmware issues ,, ms.siths laptop used to do the same thing why cause durring that login your changing a powerstate, the machine didn't like that and would hard lockup.. try disabling either ACPI in ur bios and/or remove the "linux-firmware-nonfree" package.

lets start w/ those basic things and see if that helps you at all .

Look at everything that sithlord48 just wrote. I know that he is trying to help resolve my problems in getting version 11.04 working on my Nvidia computer but, the point is, I should not have to troubleshoot this much on a supposed STABLE version. I know that when I went to install version 10.10, everything worked automatically for this computer. Clearly, there has been some regressions. I did upgrade my laptop ATI computer to 11.04 but, version 10.10 is still a more stable and better release. I almost stayed with version 10.10 on my laptop but, I have hope that this current poor version will only get better through upgrades in the next few months.

we have not determed if there are regressions untill you run the live cd and see if you have the same problems.

Might as well give up ronnowoy. One thing I've learned is they'll never admit it. Ever.

I had not had the chance to go through the live CD yet or troubleshooting on the installation process. I have to back everything up first. Then I have to have a couple of hours to try and work through the issues. I will plan on tomorrow. I will make a list of problems that I encounter and let everyone know.

                      Who won't admit what?

Every computer operation should be trivially simple for a 5-year old.

                      Every pie should be delicious.

Every sports car should be speedy.

                      Every woman should be beautiful.

Every problem should be easily resolved simply by spouting glittering generalities.

Yeah, every pie SHOULD be delicious!
And every release should be at least as good as the previous release but no dev will ever admit it

People who have used Linux (any version) develop high expectations and when things don't meet those high expectations EVERY time, we get frustrated - I do anyway. I KNOW I should take a deep breath, count to 1,000,000 and wait a day to post my frustrations, but the pressure of everyday just doesn't allow that always. Anyway, no matter what I say, I always have stayed with Linux and until something a whole lot better comes along, I will in the future. Also, I have appreciated the help freely given on the many Linux forums even if I haven't fully expressed that in the past.

Something to keep in mind, is that Kubuntu is NOT a rolling distro. Upgrading from 10.10 to 11.04 by any means other than a fresh install can have adverse results. You are not ending up with the distro that the developers made, because there are bound to be bits and pieces of 10.10 libs and such left behind. With a rolling distro it is gradually and carefully upgraded to the next level. That is why it was recommended to the OP to try the live cd/dvd. It just may be that a fresh install will work without those "bugs" and glitches. Since it doesn't take more than an hour or so to add your preferred apps back in, and I always add a bunch, there really is no reason IMO to do anything but a fresh install. Just my $.02

                                Re: Kubuntu 11.04 sucks

An absolutely strange and almost unheard of event happened this afternoon.

A friend of mine was having trouble with his HP dv5 Entertainment laptop running VISTA and protected by Microsoft Security Essentials. He brought it over for me to look at. Sure enough, his Intel Mobile 4 Express Series Chipset video driver ifgrxserv.exe was replaced by a virus. The GPU load was causing the driver to continually eat up 50-60% of one of the CPU's and 15-30% of the other. It was making his external power supply overheat and stop working, forcing him to use battery. He could not recharge and use his HP at the same time without the power supply failing. Unfortunately, Intel offered no replacement or upgrade video drivers for the dv5 and recommended that we consult the HP website for the "latest drivers". We did. There was none to be had. I did a system restore to a previous point where the system was "known" to be working good. I removed the video icons from the system tray to take their service out of memory. It resulted in the CPU consumption reducing to 30-40% and 15-25%. Still not good, but better.

I always carry with me a USB stick containing Natty Narwhale with FireFox, mulimedia codecs, flash and quicktime preinstalled and KNetworkManager configured for my WPA secured wifi. I plugged it into his HP dv5 laptop and turned the power on. Within a couple minutes I was looking at Natty's beautiful desktop. Video was using about 10-15% of each CPU and acceleration worked well. The sound worked beautifully. I clicked on KNetworkManager and it displayed my ESSID, and a couple of my neighbors. I clicked on mine and it connected automatically. I browsed YouTube and played him a couple videos. Even running from a USB stick, Kubuntu was easily as fast or even faster than VISTA running from the HD. He was stunned.

He had been having so much trouble with his HP & VISTA that he was thinking of buying an iMac, which I priced out for him at $1,660 with the same capabilities as his HP. Kubuntu was free. His HP was running like a champ on Natty and showed none of the former symptoms! You could see the disappointment in his eyes as his excuse to his wife for the necessity of a new computer evaporated while his wife watched as his laptop behaved perfectly.

According to some folks Natty is not that good! Where did I go wrong?
