(SOLVED) 11.04 fresh install - something weird happens (stuck on splash screen)

    Hi!
I'm trying to do a fresh install of Kubuntu 11.04, but I can't get it done. I had Kubuntu 10.04 installed, all updates done. KDE 4.5.1. So I downloaded the Desktop CD, checked the md5sum, which was ok. Burning process didn't show any errors. Iäve tried two different CDs (cheaper and more expensive ) When I inserted the disk, then everything seemed ok. But choosing "check cd for errors" or "start Kubuntu", something weird happens. At first nothing is happening, but then screen goes black and a lot of text is very fast.. umm.. moving (my english is't very good, sorry..). The text is something like this

    [ 0.060003] [<c a-lot-of-numbers-here>] ? param_att...

The ending is hard to read, cause I think there are two different texts, but they're moving very fast, so it's hard to read. Nothing else happens. Only way to stop this is to hold down the power button. Even after removing the disk from the tray, the text keeps on going. Really weird..
I have an older disk (actually dvd) with Kubuntu 10.10 and this one works (why??). So now I installed 10.10 and I'll probably try the upgrade to 11.04.

Any ideas, suggestions, what's wrong or what to do?
    Thanks!

The on-disk burn checking routine reports that the CD burn was bad. Time to burn the ISO again, using DAO (Disk At Once) and at a speed of 8X or less. (My cdrom has, over the last three years, "aged" and no longer burns reliable CDs, even thought K3b reports a "successful" burn. It does, however, still give an excellent DVD burn, so I use, and re-use, a DVD+-RW disc to burn my ISO.)

You've interrupted the read loop before it got to the end of the disk, IF there was a valid end to the disk, which is doubtful, and so you are left with either a power cycle, or you could open the System Monitor and kill the cd read process, which would probably disable your CDROM until you rebooted.

It burned well. A fresh CDROM install from a good burn is always faster and more reliable than an online update unless you have an extremely wide bandwidth.

Retry your burn using DAO at 8X or less. (Or, perhaps, TAO, depending on your hardware).

      Thanks for your replies!
Can't use USB, because my computer doesn't support booting from it.
And I burned a lot of CDs, using different kind of writing modes - DAO, TAO, RAW, SAO.. I thought, too, that the problem was related to burning, cause my computer is pretty old.
BUT I found a solution! I was trying to find a way to install it without CD and USB (and found it), but suddenly I found a page with solution. Unfortunately I can't find the page anymore (I think it was one of the UbuntuGeek's howtos). Anyway, it described what to do, when you get to the splash screen (start kubuntu, check cd...), but nothing happens afterwards. So, on the splash screen I pressed F6 and clicked on the first option - acpi=off - and this one did the trick. I checked the CD, no errors found, and now I'm on the live cd, starting to install in a few moments.

I don't know if this will help (or if you've already thought of it) but I tick the box in k3b to verify data before I call it a successful burn. If there's something broken in *that* routine I'd really like to know as I've been relying on it for awhile

Ya, I use that option. That's how I know that even after a "successful" burn and a green checkmark, the burned ISO is bad, because the verify starts showing read errors. And, a "successfully" burned CD ALWAYS gives problems running as a LiveCD, if it boots and runs at all. I'm shopping around for a replacement CD/DVD +-RW because I can no longer burn reliable audio CD, either.

I'll keep that in mind next time, thanks

I've had good luck with Samsung drives, both optical and magnetic.

I've had good luck with Asus optical drives. This one is 5 years old, and has burned a zillion CDs:

                Code:
                      *-cdrom
                        description: DVD-RAM writer
                        product: DRW-1608P3S
                        vendor: ASUS
                        physical id: 0.1.0
                        bus info: scsi@4:0.1.0
                        logical name: /dev/cdrom
                        logical name: /dev/cdrw
                        logical name: /dev/dvd
                        logical name: /dev/dvdrw
                        logical name: /dev/scd0
                        logical name: /dev/sr0
                        version: 1.24
                        capabilities: removable audio cd-r cd-rw dvd dvd-r dvd-ram
                        configuration: ansiversion=5 status=nodisc

Opps! I forgot to mention that my number #1 requirement is that the replacement CDROM fit in my Sony VAIO VGN-FW140/E.
