    installing kubuntu form USB stick

    hi there,

I'm new to all of this, so please have a little patience.

I've tried to install kubuntu form USB stick, but I'm having a problem at the very beginning. I used Universal USB Installer, unetbootin and UltraISO, to burn the .iso file on my pendrive (capacity=2GB). The problem I'm having is in the very beginning - after the .iso file is burned (with no problems) on the flash drive, I reboot the system and boot it from USB. What I'm getting is a blank screen with text cursor in top left corner and that's it.

Tried to find anything on forum to help me - no luck I'm afraid. Everybody can at least boot the installer.... If I missed anything, sorry. Every tutorial I have found on the internet looks easy and should work fine.... but no, not for me.

    Ideas anyone?

Any chance you trying to use the 64it version on a 32bit machine?

Another thing to check is the md5sum of the iso. The hashes are on this page http://www.kubuntu.org/getkubuntu/download

Assuming all the above checks out, you're not getting a boot menu at all or the boot menu shows and then you end up at the flashing cursor?

When you see that symptom from a Live CD boot, it usually means there is a video display problem - the built-in display system does not provide a suitable resolution for your monitor.

At the initial Live CD splash, can you press F4 and choose "Safe Graphics"?

Check out #2 on the FAQs link in my signature.

The file name I use is: "kubuntu-11.04-desktop-i386.iso" - so that's the 32-bit version. Checked the MD5 hashes - it's all OK.

I see it as soon as I press in the boot menu to boot from USB. I don't have the Main Start Page presented here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootOptions

If it's relevent I'm trying to install kubuntu on eeePC model: 1005HA. Also, I admit, I did install ubuntu with no problems, but I want to use KDE instead of Gnome.

          Hi....

          Welcome to the forums

It's pretty much the same, if not identical, under the hood. Just different desktop environments. If nothing else, you can reinstall Ubuntu and after that's completed you can install the KDE desktop environment and either have boot up options for both or you can uninstall Gnome. Please see here and here. I did this exact thing when I was using Ubuntu 5.10 a few years ago.

          Hope this helps...

Okay, will try to install KDE as you said.

However, there's another problem...? I managed to install again Ubuntu 10.04.2. When I tried to install a newer version had the same problem as I did with kubuntu. Also, the 10.04.2 version of kubuntu wouldn't install either. I'm wondering why is that? Were there any significant changes in newer versions? Do they require better graphics?

And since I'm stuck with what I have, maybe I should choose an older version of KDE - but which one?

and post the results? Also, please provide the brand and model of your system.

                  Hi...

No, I meant the name and model of your computer, not the operating system.

                      Thank you.

Just as a wild guess, try going into your BIOS and find a setting named "D2D Recovery" and disable it, if you have it. I installed Ubuntu 10.04 on an Acer Aspire One a while back and while everything installed correctly, upon reboot, nothing would come up at all. After doing some research on Google, I stumbled upon a site that gave the above solution. It worked fine after disabling that feature. Although your model is different, it may help with your situation.

If you are, by chance, running the netbook edition, here is a site that offers solutions to additional problems you might experience with that edition. Just scroll down to your model.
