Upgrade doesn't start - exited with code 1

I tried the upgrade 10.10 to 11.04 through the 'Software Management', where I get 'Upgrade to natty 11.04'.
Though when I click on it, it starts, and finishes after some seconds with
distribution upgrade process exited with code 1

What now?

Very strange ...
I also didn't get the update notification. So I rebooted. And actually it comes up, tells me that Natty is available. But when I start the update, it fails to get the release notes, tells me so, and that it has no Internet connection, and immediately crashes (Dist Upgrade Fetcher - The KDE Crash Handler).

Wrong: Internet connection is there, sudo apt-get update does a normal job and connects.

Anyway, when I click on the crash handler that I want to continue, it restarts and fails after a few seconds with exit code 253.

Solved though unexplained:

sudo do-release-upgrade
went through without a hitch. (And I was afraid that the applet wanted to show me that something was actually wrong, and I shouldn't do it. No, no AI here, yet. Just a flawy applet. Good and sad at the same time.
