    Random Crashes And Logouts

My fresh install of Kubuntu 11.04 is freezing permanently and logging me out suddenly for no apparent reason.

How can I check the Event Logs for the system for diagnostic information?

    Thanks,
    ANkh

During the reboot, or cold boot, hold down the shift key, (Left one should do). Release it when the Grub menu appears. Choose the 2nd option on the menu, which is the fail safe mode. From the console menu which soon appears you have several options for recovery. Choose the option which gives you a root console and a network connection (you may have to have an ethernet cable plugged in if you aren't using wicd because KDE is not running so KNetworkManager won't be running either).

    From the root console issue
    apt-get update
    apt-get install mc

which is "Midnight Commander", a console based file manager + editor. With it you can quickly navigate around your system and also display config files, and edit them if necessary. Navigate to /var/log, where all the log files reside. You can view them using F3 or view and edit them using F4. mc can be mouse driven. The menu at the top has "Left", for the left panel options, three more options and then "Right" for the right panel settings.

      Hi,

Thanks for getting back to me.

My system is crashing, but I think it's stable enough to check the logs without going into safe-mode.
(Current uptime is 1 day and 6 minutes)

Thank you for the tool and info, I'll be sure to check it out.
