    Dual booting Kubuntu & Ubuntu

    Guys,

I'm thinking of installing Ubuntu along side my already installed Kubuntu insatllation but i'd like to know if in doing so will the grub boot me up into Ubuntu first by default?

I'd prefer Kubuntu to remain the default option.

That was my other line of thought but I've heard about problems with menus getting mixed, i.e. Kubuntu and Ubuntu apps showing up in each desktop menu and even graphical problems with the way in which the menus are displayed.

If you install both desktops to the same install all installed apps (or at least most) will appear in both gnome and kmenu. The reports you're hearing about graphical problems likely stems from QT vs. GTK appearances.

If you truly want a segregated experience, two installs would be required. Of course, you could use virtualbox for one of them and avoid dual booting.

Thanks guys, I'm running ubuntu in virtual box now as to be honest I I'm only doing that so I can take a peak every now and then to see how it's developing. In the long run I don't see myself using anything but kubuntu.

I do have a problem with virtual box though, in that I can't get the usb2 connectivity to work even though I have installed the extras.

What version of Virtual Box are you using? If you installed the OSE version in the repos you won't ever get USB access - it's not included in that version. Try removing the OSE version and installing from their website.

            I'm currently running Virtualbox 4.0.12 r72916

I can't remember if I started off with the OSE and updated it (if that's possible) or if I downloaded it from the website to start with.

Try adding the Virtualbox repo your problem could be caused by using different or old versions of Virtualbox and the Guest additions.

              deb http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian natty contrib

Also make sure the USB 2.0 option enabled in settings. The Virtualbox manual outlines certian USB 2.0 devices that don't work as well.
