11.04 Borks Windows XP install

First off, I am not a newbie to UNIX/LINUX; I started out with CHROMIX on an S-100 job & have worked with UNICOS on the X-MP..

I've run dual boots of XP and everything from 8.04 (K)Ubuntu from laptops to servers..

So it is with a real dismay that I cannot get a proper dual boot of 11.04 and XPpro 32 bit version on my laptop.

I've done two fresh installs of XP including the Android SDK ( you know why I need BOTH O/S on the box ) for Windows...

But when I install 11.04 Kubuntu, I get the following on an attempt to boot up XP after a successful install of Natty:

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:

    <Windows root>\system\hal.dll.

Please re-install a copy of the above file.

I normally share a common data file separate from the two O/S for this reason.

However when I looked at the partitions the first time, Partition Magic and others just indicated PARTITION ERRORS and offered to reset the partition tables, effectively wiping the drive....

I did manage to recover the shared data partition and wipe both O/S partitions the first time, then did an XP full install, followed by Kubuntu 11.04

    AND GOT THE SAME RESULT!!

I've done the CL upgrade GRUB bit...I'm no stranger to the CL.

Any easy fixes I have missed out there? Yes, I've done a search. 8)

Could it be a bad drive?

The hard drive is a solid performer and I have never had problems with it. I've done all the hardware testing before the first installation. I've also ran the memtest and disk check on the live Kubuntu 11.04 disk before the first install...

I've also done dual boot boxes with 10.04 with no problems; It's useful when a virus gets past the defenses on XP..

I was hoping to find a CL fix by an expert in GRUB.

I could just go the xubuntu or server route, but I might end up with the same problems if the 11.04 GRUB is trashing the partitions...

Or chuck it and go back to the LTS 10.04 version that worked...

I'm no expert with this, but maybe this website could help you out:

You might also want to let the Windows boot manager handle the booting process.
"The only way Kubuntu could be more user friendly would be if it came with a virtual copy of Snowhog and dibl"

That's a good bet. I run 10.4 and I love it. I did try 11.4 and my screen goes blank during the boot process saying that the resolution is too high for the screen. That and there are some other problems with it on my very picky machine.

I'm not nagging on 11.4. It's gotten great reviews, but it just didn't work for me.

Another thing you can do is use a different boot manager other than Grub. It's a far easier task than changing your OS and if it works then it works.

I finally went back to 10.04.....No problems with the install of both XP and 10.04 LTS ( I used a new d/l last night )...

The GRUB boot AND the " run 11.04 from disk " breaks an existing XP O/S on the Panasonic Toughbook CF-72 ( my Android fix in the field box ).

Now to reload the SDKs and pieces for the Windows side...
