    Compiz Doesn't Work

    Compiz does not work on my system. I have done a clean install of Kubuntu, since my keyboard did not work properly in KDM after an upgrade. I have tried creating a new account and running Compiz in it, with no luck. If it helps, I have a GeForce 8600 GT with NVIDIA Driver Version 270.41.06 (185 series driver) and two monitors configured with TwinView.

    Is there any fix for compiz, or should I look into dropping KDE or Kubuntu? KWin isn't cutting it with features and nearly all of the configuration options I use are gone.

      You haven't told us what you actually did, so we won't assume that you installed/configured Compiz properly. What packages did you install, and what steps did you take afterwards?

      The following packages should have been installed:

      compiz fusion-icon compizconfig-settings-manager emerald
      Windows no longer obstructs my view.

        I installed compiz, compizconfig-settings-manager, compiz-kde, compiz-fusion-plugins-main, compiz-fusion-plugins-extra, emerald, librsvg2-common. I was following the directions at http://www.kubuntuguide.info/index.p...#Compiz_Fusion. I just added the package fusion-icon, but nothing different happens.

        I have tried launching compiz by changing my default window manager within the KDE settings to compiz, and I have launched it by simply running "compiz --replace" in a run dialog box or a terminal. Nothing has worked. I just end up with a crash screen and no window manager.

          run the compiz --replace command from a terminal you should get some output.maybe some errors.. can you provide this output for us?

          also you can in system settings default application set compiz to be your window manager. that might help too.

              well itn's that something.. very generic error at the end there lol.

              what kind of card is this on and what drivers
              now im gonna try this on my computer so ill be back w/ more....

                  I just tried installing the "ubuntu-desktop" package and looking at the unity system. Compiz still crashed for me when I tried to enable "Desktop Cube" and "Rotate Cube". If it's actually a problem with compiz, I would think something like that would have been caught by at least the beta 1 release of Natty. If it could be a memory problem, my monitors are both 1680x1050 and my video card has 256MB RAM.

                    I did not see in the above, or maybe I had too many rum 'n cokes! that you had tried to use the right click of the compiz icon in the taskbar.

                    There are two options in there and, in the SEVERAL years of watching posts, and fiddling with compiz myself, it seems rather RANDOM as to what works.

                    Would you come back and answer these rather specific questions:

                    a) do you have in menu/applications/system tools/compiz fusion icon?

                    If you do, would you pleas right click and tell us what your settings are for each one of the options in the drop down menu, like:

                    a) select window manager
                    b) compiz options
                    c) select window decorator.

                    Please provide the two, or one, options and which you "are" selected.

                    If one thinks about it, with three settings "places" and two options in two of the places that is five possible iterations of how the settings could be done.

                    One then has also all of the options in "configuration".

                    One also then has the thing about "reload" window manger.

                    So, if you could provide that information possibly people could provide more pointed options.

                      b) Indirect Rendering off (doesn't work with it turned on either)
                      c) KDE4 Window Decorator (Emerald and GTK don't work either, with or without Inderect Rendering)

                      I have in the past run compiz without a functioning window decorator. It wasn't the same experience I'm getting now. I'm not just missing window decorations, but until I start KWin again, I'm left with no window management.

                        I have in select window manager: compiz

                        and in "set window decorator": gtk

                        compiz options i do NOT have "indirect rendering" ticked, that is NOT.

                        In the emerald theme manager i have the stock settings and the default theme.

                        if any of that helps at all.

                        There are, of course, all the settings within the manager, which I will be glad to list if you want.

                          I tried disabling most of the options in the CompizConfig Settings Manager. It worked until I re-enabled KDE/Qt Event Loop. Any ideas why that would make it crash, or what I would need it for? I've gotten everything else to work except for Emerald, which I miss, but hear doesn't work with the Compiz C++ rewrite.

                            well, dunno, but I've never had compiz fully functional unless I had emerald and I have emerald theme manger under preferences.
