Ok so I updated to Kubuntu 11.04 and now when logging on I only land in a terminal and don't see any GUI - the rest seems to be working fine though. When trying sudo startx in the terminal I only get an error message (the log is attached afterwards).
I assume the only important part of my PC is the GPU, a Radeon 4870 - been using the proprietary drivers since the open source drivers don't seem to support regulating the fans, which gets annoying.
Attached are the error log when executing startx and the xorg.conf file. No idea how to fix something like this, but I'd hope I can get around installing the OS newly, quite a lot of work for a botched XServer :/
If you need more details of the hardware or some further diagnostics I'll do my best to get them.
thanks for your time
PS: As an afterthought the hardware itself is working fine under Windows, so it's no hardware fault.
