Install problem - video broke again, just like all the other dist upgrades

Once again, upgrade (this time to Natty) gives me the same "black screen" video problem which I can never seem to fix - except for reinstalling Kubuntu from scratch.

Here's the symptom: when it boots, I get a black screen ...but if I hit the power button on my PC, then the video suddenly appears and looks fine - while the PC is shutting down!

In recovery mode, it tells me Ubuntu is running in Low Res mode. If I pick "use this mode for one session", it tells me..."standby while reconfiguring...." and then it just goes back to the same menu again.

If I try to reconfigure graphics -> use default (generic) That doesnt seem to work either.

How do I get out of this infinite loop?

    Please help...thanks.

This seems to be PC/hardware specific problem. Anyway it probably is not a problem from kubuntu but from Xorg. In order to give you some advice we need to know your hardware configuration, specially your graphic board. Are you using proprietary driver? (i.g. nvidia)

I have a nvidia card, but I dont think I am using a proprietary driver.

Should I go to /etc/X11 and edit a particular file?
