kubuntu sometimes boots to a black screen

    Hi all:

I did a fresh install of 11,04 and when I boot, the screen goes black and I can't see a thing. I have to remove the battery and plug and then try again. Sometimes it takes 3 tries before the splash screen shows .

I have a Compaq notebook that uses Nvidia. Could the drivers be an issue? If so what do you suggest?

    Thanks!

Hello. Yes, I would guess that your nVidia card is giving you issues. This always works for me:

Once you get logged in, install the proprietary drivers and your issue will likely go away. Let me know how it goes.

Thanks. So do I download the proprietary drivers via kpackage? And which one to install?

      Thanks again!

Hello. Run the additional drivers package (Kickoff Menu > Settings > Additional drivers) and use the one that it says is recommended for your card. Let me know if that works.

Thanks. I don't have any proprietary driver. So what command do I use to find out which Nvidia card I have and then the appropriate driver?

          Thanks again!

One of these tries, could you take a look at the lights on your keyboard when your computer is shutting down, and see if they start blinking? I'm having to deal with a similar bug on my 3,1 macmini, and that's the only other symptom. I still have to unplug and de-power it and all.

I am having similar problems on some computers such as Kubuntu 11.04 64-bit on Asus M3A78-EM MB desktop with ATI Radeon 3200 graphics and have done all the recommended fixes, drivers, etc. I can find. However, if I start in recovery mode, do dpkg & fsck , login and startx, I can get to my KDE desktop. I noticed there was a KDM update which didn't completely solve the problem but might have helped a little. On many other computers there is no problem. On some computers that will not take a Kubuntu 11.04 install because of this problem, I can always install Mepis 11.

If you have an older NVidia card in 11.04, like an FX5XXX or earlier, proprietary drivers are not supported. But in that link I gave you was a way to make the 'nomodeset' parameter permanent, which might solve your issue...
