Settings arn't saving?

Folks: After the last post, the system went down and had to reinstall. But now I see the problem.

The monitor/desktop settings won't save. I do:

K/system settings/display & monitor

Then readjust the monitors so I have a dual monitor, the 2nd monitor is set 'position left of' (instead of the clone which is useless). Then adjust the sizes, refreshes, and primary output."

Then save as defult/save as default/ok

then apply.

then accept the new configuration.

That works just fine.

Then however, when I reboot, or shutdown and restart. it's back to factory defaults.

Just last night I also found that dolphin isn't saving all of it's settings as well.

I'm kind of thinking that some preference files has the chgrp/chown set wrong. I saw this problem in ubuntu 9.04 in which all I had to do was set xorg.conf to kcredden/kcredden instead of root/root.

I have no idea though, so need your help.

I'm using a nVIDIA 7300gs, and according to Synaptic, I have installed:

nvidia-settings 270.29.0ububunt1
nvidia-common 0.2.30
xserver-xorg-video-nouveau
jockey-common 0.9.2-0ubuntu5
jockey-kde 0.9.2-0ubuntu5
libvdpaul 0.4.1.-2ubuntu1

I have NOT manually installed any driver.

Thank you for the post. It solved the problem 100%. It told me, to sell my nvidia card, and go for a non-nivida card.

I'm not being sarcastic. I've spent the better part of a week breaking my back to install any nvidia driver on Kubuntu 11.04, Debian 6, Debian 5, AND LinuxMint, and none will work without massive problems (even AFTER I got rid of nouveau) Nvidia has basically borked the driver, or else Debian has done something seriously wrong or both.

I've installed Debian 6 on both a IBM Thinkpad T22, and an Asus Eee 1000ha without even a bit of a problem, and no post install driver. It worked right out of the box. But this system with a nVidia card has been a nightmare. So I'm done with Nvidia.

If you have any suggestions on what card (I'm thinking Intel or Savage) that can handle dual monitors, is priced around $50 or so bucks, and can work with any debian OS (kubuntu is fine) out of the box with the 3-d effects, I'd like to know.

Right now I'm installing Kubuntu 10.10 and will keep going down in versions until I have a working system. I left Ubuntu 9.04 but will go back to that if I have too.

To be perfectly honest, I've had nothing but problems with any card in linux that isn't an nvidia.

Read the ATI threads, they fare no better.

I've got the nvidia card working great now in 11.04, even managed to sort out my video tearing problems in VLC. The only problem I am left with currently is the two hda-intel audio drivers loading (cos the nvidia card has one too, and it looks like it's a problem).

Linux is great and everything, but I guess you get what you pay for.

Okay i have always heard/read that you should buy nvidia because that worked with linux where as ati/amd was far behind. Hmm.

To replay on the problem:

I use kubuntu with a nvidia card and I do the following: start nvidia-settings --> Configure my 2 monitors --> Click save and save the xorg.conf file in my home folder. Then I copy the file from a terminal with sudo into the /etc/X11 dir. And it saves my settings.

So to recap.

1. Setup the config file with nvidia-settings
2. Save the file in your home folder with the name xorg.conf
3. Move the file from a terminal with the command: sudo mv xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf
4. Reboot or close X, by loging out

This question puzzles me. Why is it marked [SOLVED]? Is it truly solved?

To go back to the first post:

To get it to "stick" you need to run nvidia-settings with root privileges. Open Konsole Terminal Program and issue the command:

kdesudo nvidia-settings

Addendium: Let me rephase this a bit. I just found out that a) I'm on Kubuntu 10.10 not 11.04 as I was before (I've reinstalled). Also I found out there must be 2 types of editors. There is one offered in Kubuntu 10.10, and there is a nVIDIA-settings one. When I tried kdesudo nvidia-settings, it said it wasn't installed. Apt-get installed the nvidia x server settings program that allows you to save the settings. Ok.

I'm going to reinstall Natty and see what happens, and repost here.

That's one way I did it, in Ubuntu 9.04. Also changing the xorg.conf file to my name instead of root solved it too. Thanks for the note. I found however, that in Kubuntu 10.10 your methiod won't work, simply because it gives no way of saving a new xorg.conf. All it has is 'apply' then accept or reject the new forum. 9.04 did however.

Ok, just installed Kubuntu 11.04, and the same problem; display settings won't save. This time I typed into a console per previous suggestions:

kdesudo nvidia-settings

I got the password screen, then it said that it couldn't create a folder in my /home/kcredden directory. I created them manually, now after the passoword screen, it does /nothing./

Help?

There should be a preview button, if you click on that you can see what nvidia-setting will write. Take a copy of all the text and open a editor and then save it there, with the name xorg.conf

You can now move it to /etc/X11

Afraid that won't work Tate: This is the built-in nvidia settings editor. It's at: K/system settings/display & Monitor and it doesn't have any preview. I'm guessing it should be called the 'nouveau' settings since I think this handles nouveau, not actual nvidia.

Well, I'm going back to Kubuntu 9.04. The last Kubuntu that worked. 9.10 had serious problems. I finally found the place where Kubuntu could install the nvidia drivers itself. (like it was on 9.04) All that did was hose the system. So until I can get a video card that isn't nvidia and works out of the box, I'll stick with 9.04.

I just love it, that I can't upgrade, and cannot get security fixes, and such. Concocal sounds like Microsoft now.

Thanks to everyone who tried to help here. But after a week of no computer, it's time to throw in the towel. I have more important things to do, like run a business and life.

Thanks for the help, Arochester. That didn't work. There is a 'Nvidia-settings' program, and there is the built in Kbuntu editor which should be called 'nouveau settings' since it doesn't affect nividia.

That's true. I had an artist friend recommend a nvidia card, and he said nvidia 7300GS. I had heard that nvidia made their own drivers for linux. And to 9.10 they worked wonderfully. Then 10.04 and nouveau turned out to be a major problem.

I'm leaving nVidia now.
